2021’s top newsmakers of Telugu TV


From successful comebacks and controversial debuts, Telugu television has seen it all this year. While a few newbies rose to glory, a few successful celebrities experienced unexpected hiccups. On the other hand, a few celebrities took fans by surprise leaving a lasting impact. Here’s a quick at the top newsmakers of 2021.

Jr NTR


The Telugu superstar made his successful comeback on Telugu television with the latest edition of Evaru Meelo Koteeswarulu, the Telugu version of Kaun Banega Crorepati. The show which was launched in March premiered only on August 22 after repeated postponements due to Jr NTR testing COVID-19 positive. Jr NTR became the first host of the reality TV series in Telugu to have signed the Rs. 1 crore cheque for its winner. He raised many eyebrows by owning a swanky new Lamborghini worth Rs 3 crore.

Samantha Ruth Prabhu


The actress is unarguably one of the biggest newsmakers of Telugu TV this year. The actress, who made her Telugu TV debut in 2020 as a guest host on Bigg Boss Telugu season 4, struck gold on OTT this year. However, she made headlines by announcing her separation from husband Naga Chaitanya in October. Despite the criticism and hatred, she faced online, Samantha rose from the ashes and won acclaim for her OTT performances. Her special appearance on Jr NTR-hosted Evaru Meelo Koteeswarulu was one of the most-watched episodes of the season. Her back-to-back vacations to Goa, a spiritual tour to Chardham with besties, and Dubai also made this year a memorable one for her.

Tamannaah Bhatia


This fame actress finally made her much anticipated Telugu TV debut as a host with the first-ever season of the globally popular cooking show MasterChef in Telugu. However, she had to make a controversial exit much ahead of the finale due to alleged 'payment dues' by the production house (Innovative Film Academy) bankrolling the show. IFA also accused Tamannaah of causing Rs. 5 crore loss by refusing to allot the requested dates to complete the shooting of the finale and also demanded advance for the second season. Both Tamannaah and the production house resorted to a legal battle, too. Anasuya Bharadwaj replaced her as the host for a couple of episodes and she, too, quit the show for similar reasons, as per sources. The show eventually concluded without a host by crowning Tejaswini as the winner.

Raja Ravindra


The Hyderabad-based Sub Inspector (SI) is the commoner who became a star overnight; due credit to his unique stint on Evaru Meelo Koteeswarulu. The cop, hailing from Kothagudem, Telangana, has won Rs. 1 crore in the episode. He became the first crorepati of the TV series in Telugu. In an exclusive chat with ETimes TV, this techie who always aspired to be a cop, shared his inspirational journey from working as a software engineer to becoming a crorepati and his plans beyond this milestone.

Symala and Narasimha

Syamala hasn't had a great year with a few notable TV appearances and adding to this, her husband Narasimha getting arrested in a duping case. Actor A Laxmi Narasimha Reddy (37), who appeared in Telugu TV shows like Karthika Deepam and Meenakshi, was arrested in May by Cyberabad police for allegedly duping a woman of over Rs 85 lakh by promising to start a business venture with her on the outskirts of Hyderabad. Speaking about the issue to ETimes TV, Syamala, said, "I'm still not aware of the dispute between Narasimha and her (complainant). We have known her for quite some time now. But I'm not informed enough to talk about the issue or about her or her motivation behind filing this case." Narasimha was soon bailed out and the couple has recently moved into their new villa as well.

Akhil Sarthak


This Bigg Boss Telugu 4 runner-up earned stardom with the reality TV show and there was no looking back for him. He was soon listed as the Most Desirable Guy on TV by Hyderabad Times. Akhil even shined as a TV host with the prestigious award ceremony of a leading Telugu general entertainment channel (GEC). He was recently roped in as a team leader in the recently launched 'Dhee 14 - Dancing Icon' replacing Sudigaali Sudheer.

Pradeep Machiraju


The seasoned anchor manages to make headlines every year with his exceptional work and at times with his share of controversies. Well, 2021 has been unforgettable for him for various reasons. Pradeep lost his father Panduranga Machiraju to COVID-19 in May. He was hospitalised reportedly due to COVID-19 and was away from his show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Telugu. Ravi had to step into his shoes for a while. He made a successful comeback to TV later with the same show and Dhee. He also made his OTT debut as a host with the game show 'Sarkaar'. Pradeep was mired in controversy as his comments on the capital city of Andhra Pradesh in one of his recent TV shows turned controversial. The anchor took to his video sharing platform to apologise for hurting the sentiments of the public of Andhra Pradesh and its official capital Amaravathi.

Anchor Ravi


2021 has been an eventful year for popular Telugu anchor Ravi. The TV host, who has launched his new show Happy Days that introduced Ashu Reddy of Bigg Boss Telugu 3 fame as a co-host, also stepped into the shoes of his colleague Pradeep Machiraju when the latter was away from Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Telugu. He soon forayed into Bigg Boss Telugu 5 which earned him the tag of 'influencer' and 'manipulator'. He earned flak on social media for his strategies and gameplay; thanks to the fight inmate Shailaja Priya over Lahari Shari. Ravi has recently filed a complaint in the Cyber Crime Cell, Cyberabad, against online abusers, too, after his unexpected eviction from the reality show ahead of the finale. He has ended the year with an exotic trip with daughter Viya and family.

VJ Sunny


The journalist-turned-actor had a dream run this year. He has quit his popular show Kalyana Vaibhogam that earned him stardom for his other professional commitments. Sunny soon fulfilled his Bigg Boss dream, too. He was crowned as the winner of the recently concluded Bigg Boss Telugu 5. The actor is now basking in the success and glory of the show. He is looking forward to the upcoming Bigg Boss Telugu OTT and his outings on small screen and silver screen.
