Default Alcohol Vs Liver

An increasing number of women are also getting affected by alcohol-related liver disease, says an Indian doctor.

Too Much Alcohol Is Bad For The Liver:

Liver disease is estimated to account for more than 2 million or 20 lakh deaths per year worldwide, the majority being from complications of cirrhosis, hepatitis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and liver cancer. Of these 20 lakh deaths, 4 lakhs are reported in India alone. Several factors can increase your risk of liver disease, excessive drinking is one of them. Alcoholic liver disease (ARLD) is caused by damage to the liver from years of alcohol abuse. Alcohol can cause the liver to become inflamed and swollen, leading to scarring known as cirrhosis, the final stage of liver disease. “Alcohol abuse is increasing, and an increasing number of women are also getting affected by alcohol-related liver disease,” said Dr. Balbir Singh, Sr Consultant - Liver Transplantation, HPB Surgery & Laparoscopic Surgeon. Below are other risk factors of liver disease:

Viral Infections
  • Hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C are liver diseases caused by viral infections. According to Dr. Singh, Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is the most common overall cause of Chronic liver disease (CLD), including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in India. However, he noted that Hepatitis C incidence is decreasing because of effective antiviral drugs and a national viral hepatitis control program that is on since 2018.
Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
  • The burden of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which results from consuming too much fat, is also showing an upward trend as rates of obesity and diabetes rise. Dr. Singh pointed out changes in culture and lifestyle, sedentary habits, adoption of a western diet, lack of physical activity, and rise in diabetes mellitus incidence as the results behind the increasing prevalence of NAFLD.
Drug-induced Liver Injury
  • “Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is also a major cause of acute liver failure in India than elsewhere in view of prevalent widespread use of herbal/ alternative medicine, non-prescription and unmonitored use of drugs,” Dr. Singh said.
Genetic Factors
  • Wilson disease and hemochromatosis are inherited liver diseases that one you inherit from their parents.
Problems With Your Body’s Immune System
  • Autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis are the three most common autoimmune liver diseases. These occur when your immune system mistakenly attacks your liver. “What India needs currently to combat the increasing burden of liver disease is a national liver disease registry and morbidity/ mortality database,” Dr. Singh noted.
