Default TOP 10 Biggest Benefits & Negatives of Vitamin B12

According to a study at Hucknall Road Medical Centre, Nottingham, patients with type-2 diabetes, taking metformin, should have their vitamin B12 levels assessed more regularly to avoid irreversible nerve damage. The study findings suggest that earlier detection of vitamin B12 deficiency through routine screening of all metformin-treated, type-2 diabetes patients could reduce their risk of developing irreversible, painful and potentially disabling nerve damage. Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that is not produced in the body naturally. This water-soluble vitamin is essential for many functions in your body. Besides keeping your nerves healthy, it also supports normal brain function and the production of DNA and red blood cells. You can easily get this vitamin from food sources. It is mainly found in animal products, especially meat and dairy products. Fortified foods are also good sources of this vitamin.

Organ meat: This is very nutritious. Liver and kidneys, especially from lamb, are a rich source of vitamin B12. Just 100-gram of lamb liver will give you more than your daily requirement of this nutrient.

Fortified cereal: These can be a good source of B vitamins, especially B12. It can, in fact, give you your daily requirement of this nutrient easily.

Tuna: This has very high concentrations of vitamin B12, especially in the muscles right beneath the skin, which are known as dark muscles. Even the canned variety is good.

Salmon: Half a fillet, about 178 grams, of cooked salmon can give you 208 per cent of the daily requirement of vitamin B12.

Dairy: Yogurt and cheese are great sources of protein and several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B12.

Eggs: This contains good amounts of B vitamins, especially B2 and B12. Two large eggs will provide about 46 per cent of your daily requirement of this nutrient.
