India's opening batsman Gautam Gambhir was bought for a record $2.4 million by Kolkata Knight Riders during the players' auction for the Indian Premier League season four here Saturday.

However, former Knight Riders skippers Sourav Ganguly and Chrish Gayle went unsold.

Following are the first 27 players, who were auctioned in the first two sessions at ITC Royal Gardenia:

The new season of the IPL is here and so are the players who will rock the cricketing extravaganza with their power hitting. Here is the list of batsmen who will grab the headlines for the coming seven weeks or so.

Presentation:MS Dhoni: I think this is a fabulous effort from the guys, it was a good start from Hussey and Vijay. We got the momentum and we maintained it and that's the reason why we could score over 200. The intent was there, it was the final and the batsmen showed intent, challenged the fielders, rotated strike pretty well and put extra pressure. Our start with the ball was great, Ashwin bowled really well, that's one of the reasons why he gets more purchase than some of the other bowlers. The big achievement is to win both the trophy and to win the fair play award. We'll look to win the Champions League as well, we have to see what kind of form we'll be in. Chennai crowd were brilliant throughout, and that helped us, particularly in the close games. It was tough to play the IPL soon after the World Cup, and after winning the WC the crowd were a bit relaxed and the turn out increased after every match. Looking forward to go to Ranchi now.

Vettori: We didn't bowl well from the start and it hurt us. We should have bowled the way we did in the last game but we didn't. I think it was a good toss to win, the wicket got a bit tougher, but our bowling was really bad. Around 160-170 was gettable, but 200 was too much. Hopefully we can look back and think how well we did throughout the tournament. We finished at the top of the table in the league stage. The RCB players are walking up to collect the medals.

Gayle: It was a home away from home, congrats to Chennai, they played better cricket and they deserved to win. It was a situation where I was not thinking about the IPL and suddenly the call came, I would thank the management and the teammates. It was great to bat with Dilshan and Kohli and to talk to Zaheer. Virat can do the hi-fis pretty well and he will learn a few moves when he tours the Caribbean shortly.Christopher Henry Gayle wins the Golden Player of the tournament award.

Chennai also win the Fair Play award, Dhoni walks up to collect the trophy.Lasith Malinga gets the Purple Cap award, Pollard collects it on his behalf.

Lasith Malinga gets the Purple Cap award, Pollard collects it on his behalf.Chris Gayle gets the Orange Cap award. A cash prize of 10 lakh.

Valthaty: God has been really kind to me, I prepared well this year. Credit to my team, captain and coach. It is going to be a bit more comfortable. Need to put my head down and work hard.Paul Valthaty gets a car for the best individual performance.

Iqbal Abdulla: This is a big achievement, and I would look to perform well. Cricket was always my passion and I would like to play the same way from here on. The senior players are helping us and Dav Whatmore along with Wasim are helping us really well. Playing for India is the ultimate dream. The rising star award goes to Iqbal Abdulla of KKR and he's there to collect the award.

Murali Vijay: I would dedicate this award to my mom. As a team we really played well. To be frank, I was hitting the ball really well. Mike Hussey has been guiding me really well and it is a great team to be a part of.Murali Vijay is the Man of the Match

The Chennai players are going for a victory lap around Chepauk. The crowds haven't left yet. No idea how long it takes before the presentation ceremony gets underway.

Morkel: Amazing atmosphere. Last time we won it was in Mumbai, we knew that it would be really special to win it at home and it feels special. Enjoy my role in the team, I support that and back the management. Sometimes it does not come out and we have to be confident when we turn out for the next game.

Ashwin: I'm enjoying the work with the new ball, I get more grip with the Kookaboora ball. There was no plan as such, I was confident bowling to Gayle, there was a bit of a mind game going on, he was a bit hesitant. I am not able to sink into this, we need to be the Man United of the IPL.

Like his best mate Mahela Jayawardene, the Sri Lankan skipper was instrumental in taking his side to the World Cup final on April 2. But unlike Mahela, Sanga has got a more balanced squad to work with. The southpaw would also like to take a leaf out of Adam Gilchrist's book, the former skipper of the franchise, who did a fantastic job after the dissapointing inaugural season. (Getty Images)

When Chennai Super Kings picked their team in the 2008 auctions, it was as if they were plucking flowers from a garden in full bloom. Cut to 2011, and they will have a World Cup Champion, Champions League Champion and IPL Champion leading them into the fourth season of the Indian Premier League.

In 2008, they picked up contemporary stars like Dhoni, Mike Hussey, Matthew Hayden, Suresh Raina, Muttiah Muralitharan, etc. and looked the most balanced unit the league could get. After the first-match massacre of a hapless Kings XI team, with a record total of 240 runs, the team seemed to be on track for bigger honours, but there were mid-season jolts. However, Chennai had their set-belts tied and sailed through to the semi-finals - only to be beaten by a magical Rajasthan Royals team in the final of the inaugural event.

Going into the second season, the expectations were expectedly high. There was obvious hype and collective brilliance of the team ensured they ended second on the league table. But the law of averages got them in the semi-finals and a resurgent Bangalore Royal Challengers were too good for the previous year’s finalists.

By the third season, the chokers’ tag sat amiably on their shoulders. The Chennai Super Kings started their campaign disastrously with early losses but Murali Vijay’s purple patch and Doug Bollinger's near perfect bowling ensured a final berth again.

They knew the match was never going to be easy against a spirited Mumbai Indians' outfit but some bizarre decisions by the opposition and no-nonsense all-round performance by Dhoni's boys put the championship crown on their head. And then they double their silverware collection by winning the Champions League as well.

In the 2011 auctions, CSK took a sensible decision by retaining key performers Dhoni, Albie Morkel, Vijay and Raina while most of the other teams were busy planning a complete make-over. And the new additions to their camp included some proven stars and some intelligent buys; all in all, an intelligent make-up by the champion franchise.

While Dhoni will lead the pack, Vijay, Mike Hussey, Raina and Badrinath will form the core batting line-up. Albie Morkel, Francois Du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo and Scott Styris are a bunch of all-rounders any team would envy.Morkel has been an integral part of Chennai’s lower middle order and his lusty hits will be more than handy. Couple it up with his disciplined bowling and ask the South Africans what they missed during this World Cup.Bravo’s move to CSK is a big boon and his former team Mumbai knows it too well and Du Plessis is talked about in the South African corridors for all good reasons of impeccable talent.

The bowling looks as sharp as the barber’s prized possession. The team of Bill Hilfenhaus, Nuwan Kulasekara, Ravichandran Ashwin and Bollinger/Southee should be good enough to turn the opposition bald. And with players like Sudeep Tyagi and Shadab Jakati backing up, this will be the team to survive against.

With all the pros of new drafts and old survivors, the con of losing the big Matthew Hayden will be hard to hold down. Haydos is one of the players whose mere presence in the dressing room transpires confidence.
Agree nothing is immortal, but a World Cup-winning captain leading another champion side may just help the Chennai Super Kings conquer yet another peak.

Squad:
Mahendra Singh Dhoni (c), Suresh Raina, Murali Vijay, Wriddhiman Saha, Ravichandran Ashwin, Subramanium Badrinath, Joginder Sharma, Sudeep Tyagi, Abhinav Mukund, Aniruddha Shrikant, Ganapathi Vignesh, K Vasudevdas, Shadb Jakati, Vijaykumar Yomahesh, (Foreign) Albie Morkel, Michael Hussey, Dwayne Bravo, Doug Bollinger, Scott Styris, Ben Hilfenhaus, Nuwan Kulasekera, Suraj Randiv, George Bailey, Faf du Plessis

Best catches in IPL 2011

He went out of ground and came back in but kept the ball in play as Kolkata's David Hussey pulled off a stunner to send back Delhi's Paul Collingwood. The catch of the tournament!

Delhi's AB de Villiers celebrates after he picked one straight out of thin air at long on to send back Bangalore's Praveen Kumar.

Bangalore's Rahul Dravid did one for the old boys as he ran back and latched on to a one-handed catch in the game against Mumbai.

And Kolkata skipper Sourav Ganguly rolled back the years as picked up another classic one against Mumbai to send back Suarabh Tiwary.

Kings XI Punjab's Yuvraj Singh smacked it high in the air only for Kolkata Knight Riders' Manoj Tiwary to hold on to a beauty in the deep.

Delhi Dardevils' Yogesh Nagar came in as a substitute fielder in the game against Mumbai and took a one-handed flying catch at the edge of the circle to send back Sanath Jayasuriya. Absolutely brilliant!

Rs. 34 cr insurance cover for Dhoni in IPL-4

New Delhi: State-owned Oriental Insurance Company has provided the highest ever personal accident cover of Rs. 34 crore to the captain of Indian cricket team Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is also the skipper of the IPL team Chennai Super Kings.

The cover includes travel risk, medical emergencies and loss of baggage. Last year, he was given an insurance cover of Rs. 10 crore.

Besides Dhoni, Oriental has provided insurance cover to five IPL teams - Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers, Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala. Deccan Chargers, winner of the second edition of IPL 2009, have been provided cover of about Rs. 98 crore, said an official source.

Indian Premier League starts on Friday and will continue until May 28. This will be the first time that the league will feature 10 teams with the inclusion of Pune Warriors and Kochi Tuskers Kerala.

The cash-rich Twenty 20 cricketing extravaganza gets underway at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai where Dhoni's Chennai Super Kings (CSK) takes on Gautam Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Ten teams would contest for the IPL trophy and there will be a total of 74 matches.
Oriental Insurance provided an insurance cover of more than Rs. 1,000 crore to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the apex governing body and the owners of different franchises in the last edition. There were eight teams in the last season of the IPL.

New Delhi: Cricket's biggest carnival - the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction - got underway at Bangalore on Saturday, with 353 players going under the hammer and a total of $ 90 million to be spent.
The number of bidders went from eight to ten as the Pune and Kochi franchise, too, took their seats in the auction room at the ITC Royal Gardenia in the Garden City. That undoubtedly added to the battle royal, chiefly fought between Nita Ambani (Mumbai Indians), Vijay Mallya (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Subrata Roy (Pune Warriors) and the GMR (Delhi Daredevils).

The first round began with nine players, starting with the prolific Indian opener Gautam Gambhir who wasn't retained by his former employer Delhi Daredevils. And the first bang of the hammer was heard when Gambhir was bought for a whopping USD 2.4 million by Shah Rukh's Kolkata Knight Riders, tagging him as sold.
Next up was Sri Lankan Tillakaratne Dilshan with a reserve price of 400,000 and the Royal Challengers Bangalore bagged him for USD 650,000.
Indian speedster Zaheer Khan, who played for Mumbai Indians in the last edition, was bid successfully for USD 900,000 by Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The big-hitting Yusuf Pathan was expectedly sold for a big amount to Kolkata Knight Riders who ended up as the highest bidders for the Baroda player with USD 2.1 million.
The other players to go under the hammer in round one were New Zealand's Ross Taylor, bagged by Rajasthan Royals for USD 1 million; England's Kevin Pietersen, bought by Deccan Chargers for 650,000; Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene, who went for USD 1.5 million to Kochi; Yuvraj Singh, bought by Pune Warriors for USD 1.8 million; and finally South African AB de Villiers who went for USD 1.1 million to Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Round two began with what could remain the biggest surprise, if we may call it that, of the auction. Sourav Ganguly, India's most successful opening batsman and skipper, was brought onto the auction table for a reserve price of USD 400,000. But jaws dropped when not even a single bidder came forward to open his bid. The icon remained unsold!
The Australian representation in the auction began with limited-over specialist and their new T20 skipper, Cameron White. The Deccan Chargers ended up with White in their team for a price of USD 1.1 million.
Jacques Kallis, arguably world's best all-rounder, was the third one to go under the hammer in round two. Kolkata Knight Riders, who seemed to be on a spending spree, once again went berserk
Mumbaikar Rohit Sharma, once tipped as the heir-apparent to Sachin Tendulkar, surprised with a final bidding price of USD 2 million spent by Mumbai Indian's Nita Ambani.
The next buy of the auction was Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh would have had a wry smile on his face when Nita Ambani bagged him for a not-so-bad USD 850,000. It remains to be be seen if the old-time foes Harbhajan and Symonds will become pals under the Mumbai umbrella.
Deccan Chargers couldn't have had a better replacement for Adam Gilchrist when they took home Kumar Sangakkara who can perform the all three roles of batting, leading and wicketkeeping as well as the Australian. The Hyderabad team had to shell out USD 700,000 for the Sri Lankan skipper.
The outgoing Deccan skipper, Adam Gilchrist, was the next name announced by the veteran English auctioneer Richard Madley. Deccan's loss became Kings XI Punjab's gain who bought Gilchrist for USD 900,000. That brought out an interesting fact related to Sangakkara and Gilchrist. Both wicketkeeper batsman, both skipper of their ex-teams and both went to each other's ex-employer.
Two other members of India's 'Fab Four' - Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman - were given better treatment by the bidders as opposed to Ganguly. Though they didn't bag a huge amount, Dravid was sold to Rajasthan Royals for USD 500,000 while Laxman went for his reserve price of 400,000 to Kochi.
Robin Uthappa, the star of IPL-3, caused a major tug-of-war between Pune Warriors and a couple of other bidders and was finally snapped up for a staggering USD 2.1 million by the Pune team.
There were five other bids before the lunch interval: South Africa's Johan Botha, bought by Rajasthan Royals for USD 950,000; New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori, sold to Royal Challengers Bangalore for USD 550,000; Kiwi stumper Brendon McCullum, who went to Kochi for USD 475,000; Indian speedster S Sreesanth, who was bagged by his home team Kochi for USD 900,000; and India's out-of-favour but talented all-rounder Irfan Pathan who took home a handsome USD 1.9 million, paid by Delhi Daredevils.

New Delhi: India's most successful skipper ever, Sourav Ganguly, probably suffered the worst setback of his otherwise glorious career, with not even a single franchise bidding for him on Saturday at the Indian Premier League (IPL) players' auction in Bangalore.
The former Kolkata Knight Riders' skipper, who upped his reserve price from $200,000 to $400,000 days ahead of the auction, didn't invite any bids at all and was left unsold after the second round of auction.

Ganguly is known for his fighting spirit on and off the field and led the Shahrukh-Khan-owned Kolkata franchise for a couple of years. However, he failed to make any notable contributions, both as a skipper and as a player, and it remains to be seen how Ganguly reacts to the snub.
After this setback, Ganguly can probably take a cue from ex-teammate Anil Kumble who quit the IPL days before this auction, citing his administrative commitments after being elected as the President of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA).

Commissioner of the IPL, Chirayu Amin, linked Ganguly's snub with league's competitive nature and its ever changing dynamics.
"It's the reality of the game, it's a competitive thing, it's not a loss of face for ganguly," said Amin.
At the end of round two, Gautam Gambhir remained the costliest player sold, bought for a whopping $2.4 million by Ganguly's previous employer Kolkata Knight Riders.

Even though the hullabaloo surrounding the IPL is not as intense this time as it was during the last three years, it will catch up as the action gets underway from April 8. And the men who would be under the scanner for everything on and off the field will be the captains. So here is the brief introduction of the ten skippers and what they are capable of achieving with their leadership s****s. (Getty Images)

The opening ceremony of IPL Season 4 promises to be a domestic affair, with performances by Shah Rukh Khan and Taufiq Qureshi
When Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his team arrive on the field for the match between Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, today evening, some of them might be humming the lines from Bob Sinclair's track World Hold On. After all, they would have listened to the track just few hours before, in the voice of music composer-singer Kunal Ganjawala. The performance is a part of the opening ceremony of IPL Season 4, scheduled to begin at 3.30 pm.

“ I had sung the Hindi cover version of World Hold On in Kabir Khan's Mission Istanbul, with my wife Gayatri. I will be singing the same track during the IPL ceremony, but my wife will not be joining me,” says Ganjawala, who hopes to lend a “peppy feel” to the track. The lyrics of the composition are: Hamara Kal Hamara Aaj Hamare Hi Haathon Mein Hai ... Hamari Jaan Hamara Naseeb Hamare Hi Haathon Mein Hai ... World Hold On Zara Massive Mera Future, Welcome To The Other Side. “I had suggested a few other tracks, like Salaam Namaste, Hum Tum and Channa Vey, but the organisers requested me for a more popular track,” adds Ganjawala.

The fourth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) kicked off here on Friday with a colourful opening ceremony and the 10 captains signing the Spirit of Cricket banner.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Shashank Manohar hoped the Twenty20 tournament would provide the breakthrough for many domestic players eager to make a mark in the international arena.

The IPL has been the platform for many domestic players to showcase their talent and pitch for an India cap.

Manohar said he was confident of the event churning up fresh international talent.

"Over the past three seasons IPL has brought up the best cricketing talents from across the world. It is an opportunity for domestic players to work towards the national cap. The last season saw breakthrough performances from youngsters and we are hoping for fresh talent emerging from this edition," said Manohar at the opening cermony of the
IPL-4 ahead of the match between reigning champions Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders here.
The BCCI chief also congratulated the Indian team for winning the World Cup after 28 years.
"I take this opportunity to thank the effort of the support staff and the fans, whose prayers were also behind this huge achievement. We waited a long time for this."

"We now have two generation of World Cup heroes which is incredible."
The IPL has become bigger this time with the two new franchises Kochi Tuskers and Pune Warriors competing alongside eight existing teams in the 51-day tournament.

"I welcome the two new teams - Kochi Tuskers and Pune Warriors. We wish them all the success in the tournament. I look forward to good performances from all teams," he said.
India's World Cup winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is also the captain of Chennai Super Kings, was the first to sign the MCC Spirit of Cricket banner. He was followed by other IPL captains.

Right, enough of the pre-match goss. The umpires are marching out and Chepauk is packed to the rafters. The fielders follow, Vijay and Hussey bound out as well. Umpire Taufel asks the scorers, 'Asad-bhai', Daniel and everyone else if they are ready. "Let's play!" Zak runs in.
Rahul: "Hey hey! What about the closing ceremony? Was that applicable only during LKM-era? Too bad." Can't believe that people actually like those shows.

Dr. Freud follows cricket too. No kidding. "I love CSK, absolutely and positively, but from a Freudian point of view, RCB might take it," he says. "Every letter of Gayle's name has concave shapes, while Dhoni doesn't."
Kalyan: "Dont know whom to support, so bought a whistle and whisky! In my room with whistle in mouth and whisky in friend's hand!"

Sharat does some da Vinci code-cracking: "4 time semifinalist, 3 time finalist, 1 time champion India won the world cup this time. CSK are also 4 time semifinalist, 3 time finalist, 1 time champion..."
Girish: "@Raaki: RCB have also broken few things... Gayle - Most runs in an over, Most runs, MoMs this season, Virat - Pomersbach's jaw, RCB - Most wins on the trot...!"

Vibhu: "Wordplay comment #31 : Its going to be Dhoni vs. Gayle-iath. Will Dhoni's slingshot do the trick?" A little contrived, but the effort is appreciated! Wordplay comments always get first preference.
Raaki: "Many things broke in this IPL: 1. Deccan won in Home Ground. 2. Malinga with his Yorkers. 3. Ashwin almost broke his head. 4. RCB will break Orange cap Rule!"

Joe: "Zaheer seems to have Hussey's number. So, Dhoni should send in Saha and Vijay to open, bring in Hussey after the first 10 overs." Can't forget that incredible knuckle ball Zak bowled to dismiss Hussey in the World Cup. He's had his number a bit, before and since.. Still think CSK will open with The Huss tonight.
Anand sends in the first comment for the day: "Challengers challenge ... Kings RULE!" No doubts over where his allegiance lies. Charankumar chips in with an interesting fact. "Team with Orange cap has never won the IPL! This is the Law of the orange cap!"

1935 IST Chennai v Bangalore .. Since I am from Chennai, I can vouch for just how brilliant the city is. It has a lovely charm, a pace of it's own, is lesser crowded than most of the other Indian metros and is steeped in culture. A bit like the CSK team - an all-round force. Bangalore matches up to Chennai on the basis of one single variable - its unbelievably brilliant weather (and this doesn't take anything away from the other aspects of Bangalore). A bit like team RCB, which some would say is a one-man team. Fitting.

"Whistle Podu Chennai!" yells Ravi Shastri. Toss it is. Dhoni has won the toss right, and Chennai will bat first. "This pitch will slow down as the game goes.. The track is on the softer side, looks a little dull, but it won't be tough to make runs on this." Chennai are unchanged, for the sixth game on the trot. Vettori says he would have batted as well. "Morale is good, fortunate we are playing again today since the players are feeling good after yesterday's game," Vettori says. Bangalore are unchanged from yesterday.

Pre-toss discussions now. Dhoni: "Big achievement to be in the finals again, since we retained players before the auction and bought back several others .. and the players have delivered on that faith."
Vettori: "These are the two form teams in the competition, so should be a good game. Great to have got a chance to play on this wicket yesterday, gives us a bit of a headstart."
1915 hours IST Hello all! The IPL is ending tonight. No kidding! Let me recollect .. World Cup 2011 ended a while back and the IPL began immediately after. Seems like it has been years. World Cup 2015 must be around the corner now.

For tonight, it is southern spice all the way. Bangalore v Chennai. Interestingly, South Indian teams have in general done far better than the rest in the IPL. Four IPL finals so far have featured six South Indian sides (CSK thrice, RCB twice and DC once). Mumbai and Rajasthan are the only other sides to have got this far in the IPL. Once each. I am stumped for a reason. I am also stumped for a choice today. I am a Chennai-ite living in Bangalore. Not sure whom to support.

Meanwhile, I hear there is some significant football action happening today as well. And a Formula 1 race. And some tennis in Paris. Cricket trumps them all. We have three games of cricket happening in different parts of the world, each a different version of the sport. Beat that! You can follow live commentary for all those games on out site. I hear we are among the few covering the Pakistan v Ireland game, which is not being aired on television in most parts of the world.
