Default JL50 (New Star, Story, Reviews, Controversies)

Abhay Deol and Pankaj Kapur keep you hooked to JL50 while Piyush Mishra adds the much needed sense of thrill

JL50 features an interesting cast of Abhay Deol, Pankaj Kapur, and Piyush Mishra in pivotal roles along with an equally interesting supporting cast. The show is a thriller that promises you to keep you hooked to it.

JL50, originally meant to be a movie, was later turned into a mini-series, and oh boy, are we thankful that it happened after all. While you often feel that things have been heading forward in a rather predictable manner, the show still manages to keep you hooked and makes you want to know more about what will follow.

The show revolves are a perfect mix of mystery and a sci-fi thriller, interestingly bringing about details from the Indian mythology. It narrates the story of a CBI investigator Shantanu (Abhay), who is on the quest to dig deep into a plane crash, of what was originally supposed to be a plane gone missing. Through his journey, he finds help from Subroto Das (Pankaj Kapur) and Bihu (Ritka Anand) while fighting someone, onto something that is rather atypical.

Touching upon the possibility of time travel, the series also has bits and pieces where it makes you feel a little too many emotions, the kind that doesn't go amiss even in a thriller that JL50 is supposed to be. While there is a balance that the writers have managed to find to give this flight a smooth landing, there sure is turbulence here and there, but those can be put up with, for the ride is worth it.

There is a brief moment when Das talking about how people in India don't question anything, but rather believe in all the taboos and stereotypes that are deeply ingrained in India and one cannot help but wonder. Through this series, the team has managed to discover a lot of things that not many would have thought, and while it is true that some of the explanations seem rather Hebrew like, you do understand them when things pan out.
One of the finest things about the series is the touch of Indianess that it has managed to keep up with, for it is doesn't try to match up to a Hollywood series in the slightest of way possible and that is a complete winner for us. The story has some loose ends that aren't justified well enough, however, those can be overlooked while keeping the focus on the larger picture that it presents.

Ratings: ***1/2 (3.5/5 stars)
