Default Bengali TV Industry - Lockdown Plans, Shooting, TV Shows Ending, Postponed

#WBLockdown: Serial makers in trouble with limited bank episodes, shootings stalled for next 15 days

President of Federation of Cine Technicians & Workers of Eastern India Swarup Biswas on Saturday announced that there will be no shooting on the floors of Tollywood, as Bengal gears up to embrace lockdown for the next 15 days, starting May 16. The television serials are expected to be affected by this decision as a limited number of bank episodes have been shot for most of the primetime shows.

Saibal Banerjee, who along with Leena Gangopadhyay, run four popular shows, including Mohor, Khorkuto, Desher Mati and Sreemoyee, said that they have a bank of seven-eight episodes on an average. “We have no option. There will be no shooting from Sunday. Without transport, the actors and crew members won’t be able to commute. Hence, even before Swarup Biswas’s press conference, we understood that we will have to prep for a lockdown. We have some bank episodes. Tonight, we will take stock of how to use those,” he told us.

Director Susanta Das’s Krishnokoli and Titli are facing a similar situation. “I don’t know the status of our bank episodes yet. Tonight, we will have to talk to the channel heads and decide our next move,” he added.

Meanwhile, the release dates of some upcoming new serials are uncertain. Actors Indrasis Roy and Manali Manisha Dey were supposed to be seen in the serial, Dhulokona, soon. But according to its maker, Saibal, work will be stalled for the time being. “The release date is not announced yet but obviously, it will be postponed.”

Similarly, television heartthrob, Sean Banerjee’s upcoming serial, Mon Phagun, has been pushed back too. “We went to Darjeeling last month to shoot a promo of the serial, but the shooting of the episodes hasn’t started yet,” said Sean. The serial will also see debutante Srijla Guha paired opposite Sean.
Susanta Das’s production house was also preparing a set for a brand new show. But that along with the other shows are also stalled now.

‘Sreemoyee’, ‘Khorkuto’ and others shows on the verge of exhausting episode banking; Uncertainty over resumption of shootings continues

Shootings in Bengali entertainment industry were suspended due to the second wave of pandemic. Until now, most of the shows managed to air fresh episodes based on their episode banking and shot-at-home footage. But as the strict regulations announced by the State Government have been extended till June 15, the makers are in trouble now.

Shows like ‘Sreemoyee’, ‘Khorkuto’, ‘Rani Rashmoni’ have mostly exhausted their episode banking. Most of these shows have been airing fresh episodes by clubbing old footage in the 'flashback mode'. But now, they have left with almost no bankable episode. The situation is more critical for the mythological shows which can’t be shot at home. If the shootings don’t resume, a number of shows are likely to go off-air or will have to telecast old episodes just like daily soap 'Kori Khela'. On the other hand, ‘Krishnakoli’, ‘Jamuna Dhaki’, ‘Boron’ and other shows, have been airing fresh episodes depending on the shot-at-home videos sent by the artists.

Rumours are rife that a leading show continued shooting outdoor with a small unit though the artists denied it. Rumours are also floating that the male and female leads of certain shows are shooting together indoors to give the viewers a realistic feeling. A few TV units are allegedly working in outdoor locations, hotels, and rented flats. Federation of Cine Technicians & Workers of Eastern India (FCTWEI) is against the practice and formed a committee to review the matter.

Meanwhile, the latest row between the FCTWEI and Welfare Association of Television Producers regarding the shoot-from-home mode has become a hot topic of discussion. Artists’ Forum has extended support to the producers and in favour of continuing shoot from home.

The members of FCTWEI have alleged that technicians and make-up artists are being deprived of work in case of a shoot-from-home mode. The members of the Federation also cited that the quality of a show gets ‘compromised’ if it is shot at home.
