Foods that should not be given to kids during winters

It is important to feed your kids right to keep their immune system strong to be able to fight infections. Here are some foods which you should avoid serving your kids during winters to prevent them from falling sick.

Festivals and holidays make winter a favourite season for many people, especially kids. But winter also brings a baggage of diseases with it as some viruses thrive better in the cold and dry weather. In winter, kids are more prone to illnesses such as strep throat, common cold, flu, stomach flu, pneumonia, acute ear infection, asthma, and itching skin. This season of celebration may turn out to be saddening if your kids fall sick during this time. Therefore, it is important to feed your kids right to keep their immune system strong to be able to fight infections. You need to make sure that your kids get plenty of sleep, drink enough fluids to stay hydrated and eat a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Fruits and vegetables are a great source of vitamins and minerals that can prevent or help fight colds and the flu.There are also certain foods that you should avoid serving your kids during winters to prevent them from falling sick. These include:


Deep Fried Foods: Fats and oils derived from animal products like ****er, omega-6 fatty acids, and lard may cause thickening of saliva and mucus. So, it is better to oily foods during winter. Use vegetable oils instead of animal oils to make your kid’s favourite fries.

Sugary Foods: Winter or summer, simple sugars are bad for your children. Rise in sugar content in the body can cause decline in white blood cells that protect you against illness and disease. Thus too much sugar can expose your kids’ bodies to viral and bacterial infections. Don’t give your child sodas, cold drinks, candies, chocolate, breakfast cereals, highly refined and processed foods during winter.


Histamine-Rich Foods: Histamine - a chemical found in some of the body's cells and many foods- is known to help your body fight allergies. But eating histamine-rich foods during winter may induce mucus production, which can cause difficulty in swallowing food and other throat problems. Histamine is found in tomatoes, avocados, eggplant, mayonnaise, mushrooms, vinegar, ****ermilk, pickles, fermented foods, and many artificial preservatives and dyes used in foods.


Meat Products: Meats and eggs contain a lot of proteins that promote production of mucus, which can be very irritating for your kid’s throat in winters. Processed meats and eggs are the worst. Fish and organic meat are better options.


Dairy Products: Animal protein present in dairy products can cause thickening of the saliva and mucus, which can make swallowing difficult. So, avoid serving your kids cheese, cream, cream-based soups and cream-based dips during winters, especially when they feel congested.
