Negative Reviews:
- Poor attempt at updating the current competition based platform. The episodes run to fast, it's hard to pay attention, stay invested or developed any kind of sentiment towards any of the designers. The fashion for me was too slave to fashion. The elimination process always seems unjust. The presenters are two people I ordinarily love, come across as false and forced and a little condescending at the wrong times and overly dramatic... almost as if its.again forced just to add something to the show. Was massive miss for myself. I was really excited for the show to start tho so sometimes that can have an effect
- I was excited to watch this because I love fashion shows and seeing the creative process, but I got very tired of seeing unfinished work and some designers doing the exact same thing every episode get through to the next round and people who created wearable, beautiful designs went home. Even if the premise is to be innovative, that should still mean that the clothes are attractive, flattering to the body, and wearable off the runway. Not to mention complete! One pair in particular created giant bags for every episode and every time the judges raved about it and sent better designers home. I'm not even watching the finale after seeing what looks like a giant foil blanket and another that was just an oversized coat over an unfinished dress get 2 people through to the semi final, when 2 pieces that were beautifully constructed and actually wearable were in the bottom 3. The judges carried their favorites and I definitely wouldn't let either of them style me. Ugh
- The show loses all its credibility when in the second episode Prabal Gurung changes his opinion after "knowing" the story of the Angel and Minju, totally influenced by the hosts of the show. After that episode you can certainly say that the experts that are invited to judge the designers have no voice and the judges already have their favourite to win. Another evidence of that happens on episode 4 "streetwear", they wanted to save designers that have literally designed a garbage bag. It was so unfair.
- I was quite excited for this show, hoping it would be something similar to Project Runway, however it's decent at best. Without spoiling much, I'd say the judges often seem to make poor choices, clearly have favourites and at times it doesn't make any sense. For half of the show everyone works in teams. About half of those teams have been working together for years and have established friendships, connection and understanding from each other, making it very easy to work together. Then you get people in teams who haven't met each other prior to the show. Some of them clash strongly and people end up dragged down because of their partner's incompetence. It can be quite infuriating watching that and seeing the unfair hand some nice people have been given. Then the judges.. What on earth are they thinking?! The lady host makes you question her credibility in fashion (honestly, the street style look she wore screamed 'white girl with no style or culture' ) and then she criticises black women who have an established name in streetwear for being 'over the top' or something... They keep praising people who deliver the EXACT same looks on each and every episode... Disappointing. However, you do get some funny/entertaining bits from guest judges or contestants themselves. Won't
- I loved how it shows new and fresh eyes to fashion and wearability. As you have probably read in other reviews, I disagree with a lot of the decisions made in this show. Judging is not good and very biased and influenced by various elements which makes it really frustrating and can't imagine how designers who were unfairly let go would feel.
- I despise this show for so many reasons. It is a blatant rip off of Project Runway. And the small changes they did make absolutely flopped. The first 6 or so episodes are done in teams. Some of the teams are lifelong friends and some of the teams met the first day of shooting. Teams are also eliminated together. How unbelievable unfair for this competition. Obviously people who know each other are going to work better than complete strangers. And often the complete stranger teams had different aesthetics and they were the first teams eliminated. Absolute BULL!
There was even one contestant who couldn't sew! How could you let someone into a design competition who couldn't sew?! And send home people who really wanted to be there and had the technical s****s to be there?
Also, the editing is horrible. I find every character unbelievable annoying. And that had to be the way the show was edited. I didn't find myself rooting for any person. I actually found it quite taxing to get myself through the series.
I hate the hosts. Who are these random people I've never heard of to tell me what fashion is? And more than that, there is too much of them. They introduce the show, introduce the challenges, check ins, model fittings, 90 second stupid tips, and then they also introduce and judge the runway?! WAY TOO MUCH! For a design competition they focused way too much on these semi famous hosts. Also whoever dresses Alexa desperately needs to be fired. She is a hot mess in every episode and never looks fashionable.
This show has good bones - 18 seasons worth of good bones but it needs some serious upgrades. Eliminate the teams. And have people stand on their own merit. Fire Alexa. (I don't love Tam either but he's better than her) and get someone with an actual fashion sense to host the next season. I feel so passionately that this show is garbage. Which is so disappointing because I wanted to like it so much. If S2 doesn't drastically change I won't be coming back.
Positive Reviews:
- Had a tiny orgasm with every episode! More of this type of tv-shows please! So inspiring and so many great designers to look out for. Not to forget the fab hosts and their hilarious sense of humor. Project Runway has got some competition!
- It wasn't until after I read some of the reviews that I realized, "Okay, the judging system had some flaws for sure (In one episode, for example, a judge ran off and it swayed the three others when it shouldn't have. That was an eye-roll moment for sure) But, whatev, it all worked out the way it should have. That and a couple of other minor bumps, I'm not changing my 10 rating because I.LOVE.THIS.SHOW. I loved the contestants, I loved the camaraderie between all of the contestants, I LOVED the contestant's s****s, and I loved that their s****s worked the heck out of the challenges. In fact, their work (collectively) seemed a lot stronger in 'Next in Fashion' than in Project Runway. I think I might like this show better (Gasp!)
Oh! The hosts! I didn't think another show could have a team as solid as Heidi and Tim, but Alexa and Tan knock it out of the 'stamp of approval' ballpark. I dig 'em. Next season, please, Netflix.
- I loved the positive vibe of the show. The designers were extremely talented and very supportive of each other. Also loved the chemistry of the hosts they worked so well together. Loved they also had a great array of guest judges from the industry. This was a switch from many other fashion shows where the designers are so caddy and negative with each other. - One thing I usually hate in these fashion designer shows is all the drama, people being nasty to each other etc, but this show has class. The contestants are mostly really nice people and the hosts are magnificent (especially Tan France). The designers are talented and they make some really nice pieces.
- I binge-watched this entire season in ONE DAY. I thought Alexa and Tan had fantastic chemistry and were great hosts. I did wonder why some people got to work with long-time friends/proteges/colleagues where others were matched with strangers with an entirely different aesthetic. That didn't seem right.
However, I loved the clothes! I felt the final 2 definitely deserved to be there. And I completely agreed with who won -- I cried at the end, was so happy for the winner. I'm surprised by the criticism by some of these reviews that there was bias or the "wrong" teams/designers were sent home. I actually thought the judging was quite astute.
And I loved the comradery between all the designers. These were nice, talented people from all over the world. That was cool to see.
Binge this one, it's so much fun! Highly recommend.
