ICC Men's T20 World Cup: Cricket Australia to Push For Implementation of Reserve Days

The concept of reserve days may be implemented during the Cricket Men’s T20 World Cup later this year as the ICC gets ready to host a meeting between the organisation’s cricket committee to discuss the playing conditions of the event. Cricket Australia will have the chance to push their case for reserve days, although currently there are no such provisions available.

Reserve days were available during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup but went missing from the Women’s T20 World Cup which concluded last month. And ever since, it has become a hot topic of debate, recently gaining steam when the first semifinal of the between India and England was washed out without a ball being bowled, and India advanced into the final on the basis of a higher finish on the points-table.

As of this moment, the playing conditions for the men’s T20 World Cup remain identical for the men’s T20 World Cup from October to November later this year, with the two semifinals to once again take place in Sydney (November 11) and Adelaide (November 12). However, an ICC spokesperson has confirmed that the playing conditions may be revised or altered when the organisation’s Cricket Committee meet in the middle of the year to discuss.

CA Chief Executive Kevin Roberts, part of the CEC, panel informed that there might be a case of pushing for reserve days but explained there also remains strong point against the same as well.

“There’s always cause for reflection at the end of any tournament or any season, in terms of how you approach future tournaments. In saying that, there will be people who suggest there should be semi-final reserve days for the men’s,” Roberts told cricket.com.au.
“But I’m not sure how the English women’s team would feel about that, not having had a reserve day in their leg of the tournament. I would imagine the playing conditions are in place for the women’s and men’s events within this tournament (in 2020) and can be discussed and considered after that’s completed.

“Typically, the playing conditions are determined before a tournament starts and we’ve got two events here – women’s and men’s – within the one tournament, albeit staged at different times of the year.”
Roberts also provided a big heads-up for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year and hinted the Adelaide Oval is a front-runner to host a historic Test between India and Australia. India and Australia were close to playing a pink ball Test during the 2018-19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy as well but the plan never materialising. However, with India now having indulged in Day/Night Tests, Roberts is excited to give Adelaide the green signal to host the marquee match venues not being announced yet.
“We’d love to see a day-night Test in Adelaide,” Roberts said. “It’s arguably the best day-night cricket venue in the world, and many would say the best place in the world to watch cricket. So a day-night Test in Adelaide would always be fantastic, regardless of the season or the opposition.”
