Palitana, a city situated in Gujarat’s Bhavnagar district, has been declared the world’s first city where non-vegetarian food is officially banned.
![]() Why Palitana banned non-veg food? The landmark decision of the city in which it banned non-veg food, criminalizes the ****ing of animals for meat, as well as the sale and consumption of meat, making these actions illegal and punishable by law. For those unversed, Palitana is a well-known pilgrimage destination for Jains and the strict move came in response to a protest by around 200 Jain monks who called for closure of the butcher shops in the religious city. Importance of Palitana for Jains As one of the most important pilgrimage destinations for Jains, Palitana is home to the breathtaking Shatrunjaya Hill temples, attracting pilgrims and tourists from across the globe. The non-violence-driven policy has contributed to preserving the city’s sanctity, and has helped the city grow by leaps and bounds. Opponents of non-vegetarian cuisine contend that the presence of meat can be upsetting and may adversely impact individuals, especially children. Gujarat’s Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel linked these regulations to broader initiatives aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. The movement against non-vegetarian food is not a recent phenomenon, both in Gujarat and globally. In Gujarat, Mahatma Gandhi was a key proponent of vegetarianism, and his influence has inspired many to adopt this lifestyle as a respected tradition. How has Palitana reacted to non-veg food ban? Since the ban was enforced in the city, Palitana has seen a boom in its vegetarian food with a huge variety of vegetarian restaurants emerging. The veg eateries offered a variety of mouth-watering vegetarian dishes, creating a unique culinary culture aligning with the religious and ethical values of the city. |
