Huawei wants Google Apps to be available on its own AppGallery
Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei hopes that Google apps and services will be available through its own app store. The new strategy will help the brand attract more customers to its own mobile platform following the ban from using US-based services including that of Google. This meant that the company could no longer use Google apps and services.
The issue began last year when Huawei was put on a US blacklist. Since then the brand’s two flagship-level devices have been launched without licensed Google apps and services. This meant that apps like Google Maps or Gmail wouldn’t be available on these phones. Watch: Top 5 smartphones under Rs 20000 This wasn’t a deal-breaker for the Huawei phones back in home-country China where Google services are anyway blocked and not really popular amongst users. However, in the international market, including countries like India and the US, Huawei users had been using a fully licensed version of Android. Here the ban did prove to be a dealbreaker for more users. This resulted in the brand losing $10 billion in revenue in 2019. Following this, Huawei launched its own operating system by the name of Harmony OS. Developed to be run on both TVs and smartphones, Harmony OS still hasn’t made it to any of Huawei’s phones. Instead, the Mate 30 and the P40 series runs on an open-source version of Android without Google services. It did, however, have Huawei’s own AppGallery. The new platform as of now doesn’t have a lot of apps. Even big names and popular apps like Facebook and Instagram are missing. Why Huawei’s idea works well for them Since then, the brand has expressed interest in still using the Google Apps by at least making them available on the Huawei AppGallery. Google Apps are similarly available on iOS via Apple’s App Store. This is possible even though the base operating system is entirely different. “We hope Google services can be available through our AppGallery, just like how Google services are available through Apple’s App Store,” said Eric Xu, Huawei’s rotating chairman, according to CNBC.
