Manu Bhaker has become the first Indian female shooter to win an Olympic medal, bringing home bronze in the women's 10m air pistol event at the Paris Olympics 2024.

Just three years back, Manu was in tears after her gun had malfunctioned (Biggest Controversy) in the final of the women’s 25m final – ending her chance to create history as a 19-year-old on the biggest stage.

On Sunday (July 28), Manu has put the nightmare of Tokyo behind her and become the first-ever female shooter from India to win an Olympic medal at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024, claiming bronze in the women’s 10m air pistol event. Manu Bhaker was just 0.1 points behind eventual silver medallist South Korea’s Kim Yeji when she was eliminated in the final.

This was after Manu Bhaker almost walked away from the sport of shooting after the debacle at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Manu, who is a nine-time shooting World Cup medallist, has become only the fifth Indian shooter to win an Olympic medal

The Paris Olympics bronze medallist from Goria in Haryana’s Jhajjar district has endured a lot in an effort to put the disappointment of Tokyo Olympics behind her. “Tokyo is one of the very sour memories of my life. I was not confident in Tokyo,” Manu is quoted as saying Indian Express newspaper ahead of Sunday’s final.

“I had doubts about myself, and my ability to win, I was putting pressure on myself to win – that feeling that somehow, I had to win. That became my only goal and I missed out on so much. I wasn’t enjoying myself, I had cut out everything,” she added.

Before Manu Bhaker, the only Indian shooters to win Olympic medals were Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (Athens 2004), Abhinav Bindra (Beijing 2008), Vijay Kumar (London 2012) and Gagan Narang (London 2012). The young shooter has broken a 12-year jinx for the shooting contingent by bring home a bronze medal from the Paris Olympics 2024.

Manu Bhaker (born 18 February 2002) is an Indian Olympian who competes in shooting. She won a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris in the Women's 10 metre Air Pistol event. She won a gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games at 16 and also became the youngest from India to win a gold at ISSF World Cup.

Manu Bhaker was born in a Jat family in Goria village of Jhajjar district in Haryana. Her father, Ram Kishan Bhaker, works as a chief engineer in the Merchant Navy. Until the age of 14, she excelled in other sports like Huyen langlon, a Manipuri martial art, as well as boxing, tennis and skating, winning medals at the national games in these event

Career:

With an investment of ₹1,50,000 by her father, Bhaker decided to take up competitive shooting. She first tasted success at the international level when she won the silver medal at the 2017 Asian Junior Championships. In the 2017 National games held at Kerala, Bhaker won nine gold medals and defeated multiple World Cup medalist Heena Sidhu and broke Sidhu's record of 240.8 points, scoring 242.3 points in the final.

In the 2018 International Shooting Sport Federation World Cup held at Guadalajara, Mexico. Bhaker won the gold medal in the Women's 10-meter air pistol, defeating Mexico's Alejandra Zavala, a two-time champion. Bhaker scored 237.5 the final match against Zavalaa, who scored 237.1. By winning the gold medal at age 16, Bhaker became the youngest Indian to win a gold medal at the World Cup.

Bhaker won her second gold medal at the World Cup in the 10-meter Air Pistol mixed team event. She was paired with fellow countryman Om Prakash Mitharval. The pair shot a score of 476.1 points, defeating Sandra Reitz and Christian Reitz who scored 475.2.

Bhaker scored 388/400 points at 2018 Commonwealth Games in women's 10m air pistol qualifying round and qualified for the finals. In the final round of the women's 10m air pistol event during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, she secured the gold medal with setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 240.9 points.

In 2018 Asian Games, she scored a game's record score of 593 in the qualification round of 25m Air pistol event. But she failed to win a medal there, as she finished 6th in the final. Eventually, her compatriot Rahi Sarnobat clinched the Gold in this event.

At the Youth Olympics 2018, Manu Bhaker shot 236.5 to stand at the top of the points table in the women's 10m air pistol event. The Indian flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the Youth Olympics is also the World Cup and Commonwealth Games gold medalist. The 16-year-old Manu became the first shooter from India and the first female athlete from India to grab a gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games.

In February 2019 she won the gold medal in the 10m air pistol mixed team event at 2019 ISSF World Cup in Delhi.

In May 2019 she qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the 10m pistol event via a fourth place finish at the Munich ISSF World Cup. This came days after her pistol jammed in the finals of the 25m pistol event when she was leading, eventually forcing her to forfeit due to her gun not being able to fire.

In all the four Pistol & Rifle ISSF World Cups in 2019, she won the gold medal in the 10m air pistol mixed event with Saurabh Chaudhry as her partner, making the pair a strong contender for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

She won the team gold for India in the women's 25m pistol team event at the 2022 Asian Games, along with Esha Singh and Rhythm Sangwan.

Manu won the bronze medal in 2024 Paris Olympics and became the first woman shooter from india to win a shooting medal at Olympics. She won with a score of 221.7 in the final, in the women's 10 meter Air Pistol category.

The rumour mills on social media have gone viral since Monday (August 12) when videos of Paris Olympics 2024 medallists Neeraj Chopra and Manu Bhaker interacting with each other emerged. Neeraj and Manu, who both hail from Haryana, were seen casually having a conversation together at the India House in Paris on the sidelines of the Olympic Games which was followed by another video which showed Neeraj in a chat with Manu Bhaker’s mother Sumedha Bhaker.

Ever since these videos went viral on social media, people have been speculating whether there could be a possible marriage match between the two Indian superstars – Neeraj Chopra and Manu Bhaker. Neeraj added a second Olympic medal to his name last week, winning a silver medal in the men’s javelin final. While Manu Bhaker won two bronze medals in the Paris Olympics 2024 in women’s 10m air pistol event and mixed team 10m air pistol event with Sarabjot Singh.

After a spate of viral memes and posts on social media since Monday, Manu Bhaker’s father – Ram Kishan Bhaker – has opened up, sharing that she is ‘still too young’ and they are ‘not thinking of her marriage’. “Manu is still very young. She is not even of marriageable age. I’m not even thinking about it right now.” Manu Bhaker’s father was quoted as saying by Dainik Bhaskar.





“Manu’s mother considers Neeraj like her son,” he added. Meanwhile, Neeraj Chopra’s uncle said about the rumours, “Just as Neeraj brought home the medal and made the whole country aware of it, when he gets married, everyone will know about that too.”

Manu Bhaker, who is 22 years of age, originally hails from Goria village in Jhajjar district of Haryana but currently the Bhaker family resides in Faridabad. Ram Kishan Bhaker works as a chief engineer in merchant navy while Sumedha Bhaker is a home maker. Manu will be next seen in action at the ISSF World Cup 2024 scheduled to be held in New Delhi in October.
