10 New Google Map features
Google Maps has also rolled out a new feature to assist drivers in preparing for upcoming flyovers in city traffic.
Google has unveiled new features on Thursday aiming to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of journeys through its Maps in India. These features, powered by artificial intelligence (AI) in collaboration with local partners, are set to revolutionize the way people navigate the diverse road networks in the country. One of the key highlights is a feature that focuses on reducing the use of narrow roads for four-wheeler drivers. Estimating road widths in India, with its vast and varied road infrastructure, is a challenging task. By implementing this feature, Google aims to provide a less stressful driving experience for four-wheeler drivers while ensuring the safety and convenience of bikers, pedestrians, and other commuters who rely on these roads. “To address this, we’ve developed an AI model specifically for Indian roads that incorporates multiple signals — satellite imagery, Street View, and other information like road types, distance between buildings, paved sections, etc. to estimate road widths at scale,” informed Miriam Daniel, VP and GM, Google Maps. Clear Callouts for Enhanced Safety To further enhance user experience, Google is introducing ‘clear callouts’ on Maps Directions and Navigation screens. These callouts will alert users to narrow sections along their route, prompting them to proceed cautiously or opt for an alternative path. This proactive approach not only improves road safety but also empowers users to make informed decisions while navigating through challenging terrains. Google Maps Flyover Callouts Feature Google Maps has also rolled out a new feature to assist drivers in preparing for upcoming flyovers in city traffic. The innovative flyover callouts feature aims to simplify decision-making for users navigating unfamiliar areas, eliminating the guesswork between taking a flyover or sticking to the road below. Android smartphone and Android Auto users can expect to see the new flyover callouts feature this week. Initially, the feature will be accessible in 40 cities across the country. Both two-wheeler and four-wheeler navigation routes will benefit from these callouts, providing comprehensive support for various modes of transportation. However, iOS and CarPlay users will have to wait for the feature’s release on their platforms, as no specific date has been announced yet. “Starting this week, you’ll see these flyover callouts in 40 cities across India for both four-wheeler and two-wheeler active navigation on Android apps and Android Auto. iOS and CarPlay support will be coming soon,” said Lalitha Ramani, GM, Google Maps, India. EV Charging Stations on Google Maps Google Maps has introduced a new feature that provides information on EV charging stations nationwide. This update extends to the platform’s search results, offering drivers a convenient way to access essential details. Users can now easily identify the plug types supported at each charging station and check real-time availability status. The tech giant has collaborated with four leading EV charging providers in India to curate data for over 8,000 stations across the country. Notably, Google’s initiative marks the first instance of offering comprehensive details on EV charging stations for two-wheelers globally. As part of its ongoing efforts, the company is poised to unveil more information regarding station availability in the near future. “We’re collaborating with leading EV charging providers in India – ElectricPe, Ather, Kazam, and Statiq – to add authoritative information for over 8,000 charging stations, representing a significant portion of available charging stations in India,” said the tech giant. Metro Ticket Booking on Google Maps Commuters will be able to book metro tickets on Google Maps, and the company has partnered with ONDC and Namma Yatri to enable the functionality on its navigation app. Users can book tickets while traveling on metro lines in Kochi and Chennai, according to the company. The metro booking experience in Google Maps is now going live in Kochi and Chennai. New Google Map feature available in 8 cities The company is rolling out the feature on Android devices this week in eight cities — Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Indore, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar and Guwahati — and looks forward to bringing this to iOS and more cities soon. Sustainable and Inclusive Navigation With a focus on sustainability and inclusivity, Google’s latest updates aim to make journeys in India more efficient and environmentally friendly. By leveraging AI and collaborating with local partners, Google Maps is paving the way for smarter, safer, and more sustainable transportation solutions for all users in the country. The tech giant has also collaborated with local experts like NDTV Food and MagicPin. They’ve curated lists for 10 major cities and tourist spots, offering insider tips and recommendations for the best places to eat, drink and explore. |
