2021 IPL 14: TOP 10 New Rules
Here are the 10 things which might add to the dynamics of the Indian Premier League in the 14th edition.
- No teams will play their matches at the home venue this year. The cash-rich league will be held in six cities across India – Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. The decision was taken so as to make it a level-playing field for all the franchises.
- The initial matches of the IPL 2021 will be played behind closed doors with the BCCI still mulling over a decision to allow crowds during the second half of the tournament.
- The 14th edition of the league will also have a bio-secure bubble similar to the one they had in the UAE. The BCCI will appoint up to 4 security staff with each franchise team who will be their designated Bubble integrity managers. They will be a part of the respective team bubbles and travel with the teams for the entire duration of the season. Their job will be to report any Bio-secure Environment protocol breaches by members of franchises to the Chief Medical Officer.
- All the teams will install “Scalene Hypercharge Corona Canon (Shycocan), a device that has the ability to neutralise 99.9 per cent of the coronavirus that might be floating in the air in closed spaces.”
- The BCCI has revised the playing conditions this year as a measure to control the match timings. According to Cricbuzz, BCCI said, “As a measure to control the match timings, the 20th over in each innings is now included in 90 minutes, earlier the 20th over was to start on or before the 90th minute.” Furthermore, the BCCI also stressed on the fact that the minimum over-rate to be achieved in IPL Matches shall be 14.11 overs per hour (ignoring the time taken by time-outs).” In uninterrupted matches, this means that the 20th over should finish within 90 minutes (being 85 minutes of playing time plus 5 minutes of time-out) of the start of the innings. For delayed or interrupted matches where an innings is scheduled to be less than 20 overs, the maximum time of 90 minutes shall be reduced by 4 minutes 15 seconds for every over by which the innings is reduced,” the BCCI further added.
- The BCCI has introduced a new rule by removing the rule of soft signal when a decision is referred to the third umpire which would mean that the umpire’s soft signal will have no bearing on the third umpire’s decision.
- In IPL 2021, the third-umpire will now have the option to over-rule on-field umpire’s short-run calls. Last year a controversial short-run call was made by the umpire during the clash between Delhi Capitals and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).
- The IPL governing body decided to s**** the soft signal for both catches as well as for obstructing the field dismissals. Some of the soft signals from the umpire sparked a lot of controversy during India vs England series.
- Keeping the Covid protocols in mind, a new ball will be taken in case it lands into the stands or outside the ground.
- The general public and the media persons will not have access to the Bubble facilities as well as the stadium facilities for any activity.
