Who were the biggest IT employers in the country in terms of numbers during the year 2008-09? Nasscom released a list of top 20 biggest IT employers in India.

However, the recession pangs clearly showed across companies in the list. While there were job cuts at some companies, other went for salary cuts. Salary freeze was announced almost across the board.

Default Tata Consultancy Services



Little surprising that topping the list of biggest IT employers in India is the country’s numero uno IT services company Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The Tata group company reported a total employee strength of 141,642 during its first quarter earnings of fiscal 2009-10. The headcount at TCS went down for the first time in the first quarter ended June 30, as the company put a near-freeze on hiring. It reported a net addition decline (in headcount) of 2,119.

Foreign nationals formed 8.3 per cent of the total employee base and 30 per cent were women. The attrition rate in Q1 was 11.5 per cent. At the end of FY2008-09, TCS had 143,761 employees on its rolls, after an addition of 13,418 employees during the fourth quarter (Q4) ending March 2009.

This year company hopes to add a net employee count of 16,000-17,000. This is about half of the total number it hired during the previous year.

Default Infosys Technologies



Next on the list is the country’s second biggest software exporter Infosys Technologies. As on June 30, 2009, Nasdaq-listed Infosys and its subsidiaries had a total of 1,03,905 employees on board.

However, India's second largest IT major said the number of its employees declined by 945 in the first quarter of this fiscal. The company had hired close to 3,538 employees in the June quarter, but after taking into account attrition and other factors its total strength has actually lowered. During the quarter, Infosys and its subsidiaries added 3,538 employees (gross). The net decline during the quarter was 945. In the fourth quarter last year, the company had seen net additions of 1,772 employees. The company witnessed an attrition rate of 11.1% in this fiscal’s Q1, against 13.6% in the corresponding period in the previous year.

Besides, in the entire financial year ended March 31, 2009, the company had hired 28,231 employees, however, the net additions for the year were just 13,663.

Default Wipro Ltd



At no. 3 is the India's third-largest software services exporter Wipro Technologies. The company had 98,521 people on its rolls as on June 30, 2009. During the first quarter of current fiscal, the company recruited 711 employees. The company did not provide attrition rate details,

The company had 97,810 employees as of March 31, 2009, which included 74,986 employees in IT services business and 22,824 employees in BPO business.

This presented a net addition of 845 employees comprising a decline of 401 employees in IT Services business and an addition of 1,246 people in BPO business for the quarter.
