Bihar Assembly Election 2020: Know The Key Candidates Contesting For Phase 2

Bihar Assembly elections 2020: This phase will cover 94 assembly seats in 17 districts and is said to be the most crucial out of the three phases of the assembly election. In this phase, over 2.85 crore voters will be deciding the fate of around 1,500 candidates.

New Delhi: The Bihar Assembly Elections 2020 is all set to witness its second phase of polls on Tuesday. This phase will cover 94 assembly seats in 17 districts and is said to be the most crucial out of the three phases of the assembly election. Of the 94 seats at stake in this phase, the RJD is contesting 56, the BJP 46 and the JD(U) 43. The districts in which polls will be held in the second phase are West Champaran, East Champaran, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Vaishali, Samastipur, Begusarai, Khagaria, Bhagalpur, Nalanda, and Patna. In this phase, over 2.85 crore voters will be deciding the fate of around 1,500 candidates. Among the key candidates contesting in this phase are sons of former chief minister of Bihar Lalu Prasad Yadav–Tejashwi and Tej Pratap Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and also Chandrika Rai from RJD. The other prominent candidates trying their luck in this phase are Pushpam Priya Choudhary of Plurals Party, Luv Sinha, son of Shatrughan Sinha and BJP’s Nand Kishore Yadav. Here’s some detailed information about key candidates contesting in the second phase of the Bihar Assembly elections 2020:

Tejashwi Yadav: Former Deputy Chief Minister and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav is the party’s chief ministerial candidate. He is contesting from Raghopur assembly constituency in the Vaishali district. Tejashwi is one of the incumbent legislators and seeking re-election from the Raghopur seat for the second time. The other contestants from this seat are BJP’s Satish Kumar and Chirag Paswan-headed Lok Janshakti Party’s (LJP) candidate Rakesh Roshan.

Tej Pratap Yadav: Former Minister and the eldest son of former Bihar chief ministers Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, this candidate is contesting from the Hasanpur assembly constituency. His main challengers are two-time MLA Rajkumar Rai of the JD(U) and Manish Kumar Sahni of the LJP. However, the main contest is expected to be between incumbent Rai and Tej Pratap Yadav.

Chandrika Rai: Former Bihar minister and six-time MLA Chandrika Rai will contest in the second phase of assembly elections from his stronghold of Parsa constituency in Saran district. Rai, the father-in-law of Tej Pratap Yadav is contesting on a JD(U) ticket and had joined the JD(U) just ahead of the Assembly polls. He has also represented the seat several times and won it six times as an RJD leader. Rai is up against RJD’s Chhote Lal Rai.

Pushpam Priya Choudhary: This candidate is the daughter of Janata Dal-United leader Vinod Chaudhary and a LSE graduate who floated her new party, Plurals Party. The 33-year-old candidate is contesting from Bankipur assembly seat which comes under the Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency. She is a new entrant in Bihar’s politics and has declared herself the chief ministerial candidate of her party. She has launched her party with a promise to transform the state and has fielded its candidates on all 243 seats. Her challengers are debutant Luv Sinha and three-time MLA Nitin Nabia of the BJP.

Luv Sinha: This Congress candidate is a Bollywood actor and Shatrughan Sinha’s son Luv Sinha who is making his electoral debut from Bankipur assembly seat, in senior Sinha’s erstwhile Patna Lok Sabha constituency. Patna Sahib Lok Sabha constituency was represented by Shatrughan Sinha twice, in 2009 and 2014. His challengers are BJP’s Nitin Nabin and Pushpam Priya Choudhary of Plurals Party. Before entering the field of politics, Luv Sinha also tried his luck in two Bollywood movies.

Nand Kishore Yadav: This BJP leader is a minister in the present Nitish Kumar government and is in the fray trying to retain Patna Sahib for a seventh consecutive term. Yadav faces a challenge in Bankipur from Congress candidate Luv Sinha.

Manju Verma: The JD(U) has fielded former social welfare minister Manju Verma for the Cheria-Bariyarpur seat in the Begusarai district. Verma earlier had to step down from her post when it was alleged that her husband had close ties with the prime accused in the Muzaffarpur shelter home *** scandal case which involved 34 girls.

Mangita Devi: RJD’s Mangita Devi is pitted against LJP’s Guddi Devi on the Runni Saidpur constituency. Mangita Devi hails from a political family and her father-in-law Bhola Rai had also won from the seat in the past. Meanwhile, Mangita’s main challenger, Guddi Devi, was a JD(U) leader but had crossed over to the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) after she was denied ticket by her party.
