This 2024 film featured two big superstars, yet failed to meet higher expectations at box office. We are talking about none other than Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Vettiyan. After the massive success of Jailer, the superstar was expected to deliver another box office hit. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case. Instead, he suffered a major setback with Vettiyan as it failed miserably to match the expectations.

Released on October 10, the Kollywood action drama received mixed reviews from critics and positive word-of-mouth from the audience. However, this favourable response didn’t translate into numbers, and Vettaiyan turned out to be failure in the domestic market. The biggest problem was the film’s whooping budget, which seems too huge to be recovered.

Vettaiyan was reportedly made on a budge of Rs 300 crore. However, it earned Rs 148.15 crore, resulting in a box office deficit of Rs 151.85 crore. With such a large amount to recover, the film reportedly became Rajinikanth’s biggest flop in last 10 years.

Helmed by TJ Gnanavel, the film was bankrolled by Subaskaran Allirajah’s Lyca Productions. Apart from Rajinikanth and Amitabh Bachchan’s, the film also featured notable performances of Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, Manju Warrier, Ritika Singh and Dushara Vijayan in significant roles.

Talking about Vettaiyan’s storyline, the film portrays Rajinikanth as a retired police story officer, who accidentaly shoots an innocent person during an encounter ****ing, whereas Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of the character of Justice Dr. Sathyadev Bramhadutt Pande, from the National Human Rights Commission of India. This marks Big B’s Tamil debut. He also shared a heartfelt moment with Rajinikanth on his Instagram handle. Praising the actor, Big B wrote, “Am honoured and privileged to be with the Thala the Great Rajni again .. he hasn’t changed at all .. the same simple humble down to earth friend despite his stratospheric greatness !!!
