In addition its sharp, 15-inch display, the Aspire E 15 (E5-575-33BM) has a 1TB hard drive, a decent 4GB of RAM and a capable Intel Core i3 CPU. If you want more storage or RAM, a bottom panel pops off to allow easy upgrades.

Following a 2017 refresh to its range, models with the Touch Bar and fingerprint scanner will set you back £1,749, while the price of the standard 13-inch model has dropped to £1,199. The IdeaPad 720S is slightly large 14-inch frame means overall weight is relatively high at 1.55kg, this is still very much an Ultrabook. It’s powerful, with a decent Intel Core i5-7200U processor that’s ripe for video and photo editing, along with dedicated graphics from Nvidia. The GPU isn’t worthy of the latest games at high resolutions, but if you have a hankering for older titles then it will do just fine.

It sports sleek, all-metal chassis, sharp screen and ability to run Android apps, the Flip C302CA offers a truly premium Chromebook experience for under $500. Asus's 12.5-inch convertible is one of the few devices that runs Google's OS on a full HD (1920 x 1080) screen.

It packs a powerful CPU, it now includes a Nvidia GTX 1060 Max-Q – capable of running all of the latest games – in a laptop less than an inch thick. You won’t find a Nvidia MaxQ equipped laptop cheaper than the Dell Inspiron 15 7000.

Microsoft's new Surface Laptop is an attempt to "reset the category". There's no doubt it is an excellent device, with long battery life, a slim build and a unique Alcantara fabric keyboard, that feels almost warm to touch. It's also without doubt the most beautiful Windows device this year.

Weighing 1.29kg it sports a 13.3-inch form factor and is loaded with security features. The Dell XPS 13 offers more power and the screen is ready for Windows Ink if you buy it with the optional stylus. The whole package is expensive for a plain laptop, but given its premium design, sturdy hinge and draw-ability, it doesn’t seem quite so crazy.
