Some of the heart-healthy measures are outlined below:
- Heart-friendly diet which includes complex carbohydrates with 4 to 5 servings of fruits and shallow cooked vegetables and reduction in intake of processed and frozen foods.
- Daily exercise and optimal physical activity. 30 minutes of walk daily or 150 minutes in a week is proven to be a saviour against high BP, diabetes and heart disease.
- Reduction in alcohol consumption.
- Avoid the consumption of tobacco in any form.
- Alleviation of stress levels through yoga and other recreational activities like swimming, gardening or music etc.
- Stress is an unavoidable part of life, but how you deal with it can make a significant difference.
- Schedule some time for yoga or meditation.
Heart attack in young people: what you need to consider?
- Dr Sanjeev Gera, Director of Cardiac Sciences, Fortis Hospital, Noida, speaks to India about the necessity of awareness among young people. He explains “They must be educated about the importance of regular exercise and a healthy heart diet to maintain optimal body weight.
- Symptoms like central chest discomfort, breathlessness, sweating or persistent uneasiness should not be ignored and be further evaluated by ECG, Echocardiogram or a stress test. We also recommend annual preventive checks with regular home BP and sugar monitoring for people at risk of early heart disease like those with family history, high BP, pre-diabetes or diabetes, high cholesterol or obesity”.
