Intel announces 10th gen Core H-Series CPU to take on AMD’s Ryzen platform

Intel has announced the 10th generation H-series mobile processor family today. With the new H-series, Intel is claiming to offer the fastest mobile processor yet. With AMD making leaps and bounds with its new Ryzen 4000 series mobile platform, Intel is making the case to compete. The new 10th generation H-series processors are aimed directly at gamers and mobile creators. The highlight of this new platform is that these processors can reach up to 5.3GHz of clock frequency.

Intel 10th gen H-series CPU: All you need to know

As part of this new lineup, Intel is promising over 100 designs from its partners. There will be more than 30 designs in the thin and light form factor. Interestingly, Intel says more than 60 percent of SKUs in this lineup will reach 5.0GHz clock frequency. While gaming remains a big focus, Intel is highlighting how 10th gen H-series bring significant improvements for creative professionals. The Santa Clara, California-based company, says there are over 60 million creators.

It also notes that more than 50 percent gaming laptops are bought to create. As a result, it is seeing more than 30 10th gen design wins, more than 50 percent from last generation platform. Like before, there will be Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9 SKUs available as part of the 10th gen H-series platform. The showstopper here is the Core i9-10980HK, which replaces the Core i9-9980HK. This is an 8-core CPU with 16 threads and up to 5.3GHz clock speed.



In comparison to a three-year-old PC, Intel claims up to 54 percent more frames per second while gaming. It will also deliver up to 44 percent better overall performance and up to 2x faster 4K video rendering and export. The processor has 2.4GHz base clock speed and maximum single core turbo frequency of 5.3GHz. It has TDP of 45W and supports Thermal Velocity Boost. The processor is unlocked with 16MB Smart Cache, two channel DDR-2933 and Optane Memory support. Other SKUs include Core i7-10875H, Core i7-10850H, Core i7-10750H, Core i5-10400H and Core i5-10300H.

The Core i7-10850H seems to be aimed at creators with partial unlocking, base clock speed of 2.7GHz and turbo up to 5.1GHz. This is a six-core CPU with 12 threads and 45W TDP. The new H-series processor family brings support for Turbo Boost Max Technology 4.0. There is also a new speed optimizer that offers a simple one-click method to overclock. They also have integrated Intel WiFi 6 AX201 for gigabit internet connection. Other features include support for up to 128GB DDR4 memory capacity. There are also up to 40 platform PCIe lanes for capability expansion.

“The new platform is optimized for enthusiasts and creators by delivering the fastest frequency in the industry with 5 GHz across the majority of the volume which will deliver amazing game play and rich creation for users,” said Fredrik Hamberger, general manager of the premium and gaming laptop segments at Intel.

In a nutshell, the new platform will bring new form factor and thinner models with faster performance. Intel said there will be more than 30 10th gen H-series systems that measure 20mm or less in thickness. It will bring new devices including 17-inch laptops with slim borders. For gamers, the platform will enable 300Hz refresh rate displays. Creators should get excited for HDR 1000 panels and displays. With the 10th generation H-series, Intel is further pushing the idea of desktop caliber performance on mobile form factor. However, it now has a formidable competition in the form of AMD. The positive reviews generated by AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS should force Intel to rethink its strategy.
