Default World Cup: BCCI to give Wankhede Stadium a Rs 2 bn makeover

MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will give Wankhede Stadium, the host for the 2011 World Cup final, a Rs 2 billion makeover.

VP Sharad Pawar said the final would be played on 2 April 2011 in Mumbai while unveiling the complete schedule for the World Cup event here today.

The BCCI is talking to the government regarding visa permissions for foreign visitors who will come to India for the event. Ticket prices will be reasonable, Pawar added.

The BCCI is supporting the state associations in upgrading their infrastructure and has sanctioned Rs 500 million for several proposals, Pawar said.

The first match of cricket's showpiece event will be a grudge match. and Bangladesh clash in the opener on 19 February at Dhaka.

The first match that India will host will see four time champions Australia take on Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad on 21 February. Pakistan does not play a league match in India.


ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat, who reaffirmed that the ODI format is alive and healthy, clarified that the Champions Trophy will now be held once in four years. "The next time it will take place is 2013. Earlier it used to take place every two years. The twenty20 World Cup will take place every two years," he said.
