The fate of the IPL 2020 is likely to be decided on Tuesday, March 24 when BCCI officials sit down for a video conference with franchise owners to decide the way forward. The 13th edition of the IPL, which was supposed to start Match 29, was initially postponed to April 15, but with the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country and with lockdowns imposed on several cities, there is no clarity over the status of this year’s IPL.

“BCCI and IPL franchise to have a conference call on coming Tuesday to discuss the process and further way of IPL 2020. “BCCI office has closed so no meeting can be held there similarly no meeting can be held in the hotel so they have opted conference call,” a BCCI source told ANI.

As on 1400 IST India time on Monday, the number of COVID cases has jumped to 415 and with the numbers likely to increase as per the Health Department, lockdowns are expected to continue. In such a scenario, the BCCI is reportedly going to make the call on March 24, which is expected to be the final verdict on the matter.

At the moment, the chances of IPL taking place at all appear dim, with its biggest hindrance – barring the number of positive COVID-19 cases in the country – being whether players coming from abroad are allowed visas. This can lead to the IPL being postponed even further and in a worst-case scenario, be entirely called off.

A couple of weeks ago, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said that everyone’s safety and people’s well-being remains the top priority and if at all the IPL takes place, it will be truncated. Last week, a top BCCI source confirmed to Times of India that officials have given up on the possibility of the tournament taking place and hence were eyeing the July-September window to conduct it.
