All Films Releasing in July 2020 - OTT Releases Films, TV Shows, Web Series (Amazon Prime Videos, Netflix, Disney Hot Star, Zee5..)

Dil Bechara | Premieres Friday, July 24, on Disney+ Hotstar

Plot: A remake of The Fault in Our Stars, the story of two cancer patients whose lives intertwine at chemotherapy.

Our Take: Along with fans around the world mourning Sushant Singh Rajput's death, I look forward to watching one of his final acting performances.

Shakuntala Devi: Human Computer | Premieres Friday, July 31, on Prime Video

Plot: Based on the life of Shakuntala Devi, the renowned mathematical genius from India, nicknamed 'Human Computer' due to her ability to solve complex problems without a machine.

Our Take: Since the poster launched for the movie in late 2019, I was suprised to learn that Shakuntala Devi's life and legacy in STEM and as a feminist icon has never been centralized in a movie. I'm excited to see one of my favorite actresses, Vidya Balan, take on Devi's legacy.

'Hamilton' | Premieres Friday, July 3, on Disney+

Plot: The story of Alexander Hamilton -- politician, statesman and Founding Father.

Our Take: You could argue that watching Hamilton on the small screen is not exactly being the room where it happened, but I’m not throwing away my shot to finally see Lin-Manuel, Leslie, Daveed, Renée, and the rest of the spectacular founding cast in the original Broadway production. — Vanessa

"Hanna" | Season 2 Premieres Friday, July 3, on Prime Video

Plot: Equal parts high-concept thriller and coming-of-age drama, HANNA follows the journey of an extraordinary young girl raised in the forest, as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is.

Our Take: Season 1 started as a fairly close retelling of the 2011 original, but quickly expanded the Hanna-verse with the introduction of new UTRAX child soldiers. I'm excited to see how star Esme Creed-Miles mixes it up with the new recruits. — James

'John Lewis: Good Trouble' | Premieres Friday, July 3, on Netflix

Plot: A documentary that explores Georgia representative John Lewis', 60-plus years of social activism and legislative action on civil rights, voting rights, gun control, health care reform, and immigration.

Our Take: My high school Civics teacher introduced me to Representative Lewis via his speech at the March on Washington in 1963. He was the youngest speaker at the event, which became part of American history the moment Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial. Similar to RBG, I hope this documentary introduces an entirely new generation to Lewis and his ongoing campaign for reform, justice, and peace.

"JU-ON: Origins" | Premieres Friday, July 3, on Netflix

Plot: The legendary horror franchise is set to once again shake the world as Netflix Japan sets to release its first-ever horror of Netflix Japan Original, "JU-ON: Origins."

Our Take: If I'm being completely honest, I don't know that there's any good reason to revisit a cinematic universe that has spanned over a dozen movies (including multiple remakes by the original director) and multiple shorts. But who am I to hold a grudge? Though there are few details about the upcoming Netflix series, I'm hoping the series returns to the format of loosely connected vignettes, which managed to creep me out like nothing else could, back in 2003.

"Say I Do" | Premieres Wednesday, July 1, on Netflix

Plot: In this reality show, couples overcome obstacles to celebrate their love in surprise dream weddings designed by three experts in less than a week.

Our Take: As one of many, many brides whose wedding plans have been put on hold due to COVID-19 concerns, I am absolutely in need of some positive vibes on that front, no matter how cheesy — and who better to supply them than the creators of “Queer Eye”? I already said yes to the dress, and now plan to watch as the big day comes together seamlessly for some deserving couples, with help from a notable interior designer, fashion designer, and chef. It remains to be seen whether their personalities measure up to those of the Fab Five (give me Jonathan Van Ness 2.0), but I’m willing to take a leap of faith. — Hannah

"Maxxx" | Premieres Wednesday, July 28, on Hulu

Plot: As a former boy-band singer stages his international comeback, he will stop at nothing to get back on top — even if it means losing all self-respect.

Our Take: An opportunity to laugh along at O-T Fagbenle in man-child mode is a welcome brief respite before he returns in "The Handmaid's Tale" and makes me wish, yet again, that I lived in Canada. "Maxxx" doesn't have the most original premise around, but if you laugh every time you watch Popstar, here's your new summer show.

"Warrior Nun" | Premieres Thursday, July 2, on Netflix

Plot: A 19 year-old woman wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life and a divine artifact embedded in her back. She discovers she is now part of an ancient order that has been tasked with fighting demons on Earth, and powerful forces representing both heaven and hell want to find and control her.

Our Take: "Warrior Nun" wasn’t on my radar when the action-packed trailer dropped in June, but it looks like it might fit the "Motherland: Fort Salem" sized hole in my viewing schedule. This series has just about everything I enjoy in a TV series: reluctant chosen ones, secret societies, demon fighting, women kicking ass, battles between Good and Evil for the fate of the world, so I’m all in. — Vanessa

14 Shows & Films To Look Out For Streaming in July on Leading Platforms

Shows from leading digital platforms like Sony Liv, Amazon Prime Video, Zee5, Netflix, and others.

Is it the monsoon or just the overall dearth of shooting so far that there is an obvious dearth of content (Indian) on streaming platforms to look forward to. There is, as usual, a barrage of global shows coming in with various presentations but Indian shows are limited this month, however not unworthy. Let's rock and roll-

ZEE5
Mafia

Rather cliched on the lookout, but this series will explore six former college friends come together after for a reunion party as past relationships, hatred and betrayal became the centre of all things. The most notable face in this one is Namit Das.

APPLE TV
Little Voice
When: 10th July
Star Wars man and Emmy Award winner J.J. Abrams creates this coming-of-age drama starring Sara Bareilles which also has original music by her own self. This is one to watch out for.
Greyhound
When: 10th July
It is only fitting that Apple TV's next big one has the one-and-only Tom Hanks in the forefront. Being one of the first celebrities to be diagnosed with and recovered well, Hanks leads this World War II drama which is even written by him.

VOOT SELECT
Outcry
When: TBD
Real-life stories (controversial) always make for fantasizing viewing and this one is yet another docudrama to witness. The five-part documentary series shows the gripping story of high school football star Greg Kelley who was convicted of ***ual assault of a four-year-old boy, and sentenced to 25 years in prison with no possibility for parole. But a groundswell of support emerged for Kelley, calling into question the investigation, the prosecution’s tactics and ultimately, the validity of the conviction.

SONY LIV

Undekhi
When: 10th July
A fascinating crime thriller said to be inspired by real events, the show is directed by Ashish R. Shukla and stars some fine talents like Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Surya Sharma, and Harsh Chayya among others.
Avrodh
When: TBD
The URI fever seems to be too huge to just have one massive film to sustain it as inspired from the same and based on the book, India’s Most Fearless. Avrodh stars Amit Sadh, Neeraj Kabi, Darshan Kumar, and others.
Ram Singh Charlie
When: TBD
Actors like Kumud Mishra and Divya Dutta rarely getting leading roles to portray but this one has them in the forefront where the film is about a Charlie Chaplin impersonator who is forced to become a rickshaw driver after the circus where he used to perform shuts.

DISNEY+ HOTSTAR
Hamilton
When: 3rd July
Probably the most popular broadway presentations of all time, this mega play gets a digital release for the world to witness as Lin Manuel Miranda merges hip hop and history in an unforgettable live storytelling experience.
Dil Bechara
When: 24th July
The late Sushant Singh Rajput's last acting performance, Dil Bechara is scheduled for a global digital release where the film is an official adaptation of The Fault In Our Stars.

AMAZON PRIME VIDEO
Absentia Season 3

Caste fame Stana Katic starrer Absentia returns for the third season where her agent Emily Byrne's suspension from the FBI is nearing its end a criminal case hits close to home, sending Emily on a dangerous journey that threatens the lives of the family she is desperately trying to hold together.
Just Mercy
When: 21st July
Having already garnered amazing reviews, it seems Michael B Jordan can do no wrong. The actor stars alongside Jamie Foxx in an inspiring true story about a young lawyer and his history-making battle for justice after he chooses to defend a man sentenced to die for the notorious ****** of an 18-year-old girl, despite an abundance of evidence proving his innocence.
Breathe Into The Shadows
When: 10th July
Probably the biggest Indian show to look forward to, the second season of Amazon Prime Video's first-ever Indian original returns with the debut of actor Abhishek Bachchan in the web world. The trailer was recently launched and has already garnered a lot of noise and excitement so far.

NETFLIX
The Protector Season 4
When: 9th July
Yet another global hit but still rising in the Indian front, the Turkish superhero series returns with a fourth season, and time travel is the topic of conversation yet again here.
Down To Earth With Zac Efron

Not much of a story or huge thing but Zac Efron journeys around the world with wellness expert Darin Olien in search of healthy, sustainable ways to live. But come on, its Efron we are talking about here! So, can see!
