Default Apple might delay launch of 5G iPhones due to COVID-19 pandemic

Apple could reportedly delay the launch of its first 5G iPhones due to the*outbreak of coronavirus, which causes COVID-19. The company was expected to launch its*next-generation range of iPhones in September, which might*now get delayed, as per the latest report by Nikkei Asian Review. Aside from obvious supply constraints, Apple is*worried that the demand for its first 5G phones will be weak due to*coronavirus pandemic.

“Supply chain constraint aside, Apple is concerned that the current situation would significantly lower consumer appetite to upgrade their phones, which could lead to a tame reception of the first 5G iPhone,” said a source with direct knowledge of the discussion. “They need the first 5G iPhone to be a hit,” the cited source reported.

The iPhone-maker has reportedly held internal discussions and might delay the launch by a few months. While Apple released the*iPhone X in early November 2017, and the iPhone XR in October 2018, there is a possibility that the 2020 iPhones may not launch simultaneously. Apple is widely rumored to launch four new iPhones this fall.*The report says that one iPhone component supplier has indicated a later launch is possible.

“We have been notified to start shipping in big volumes to meet Apple’s new product launch by the end of August, instead of like in previous years, when it would be sometime in June,” said a supplier of components related to printed circuit boards. “The change was made very recently, and that could imply that the mass production of the phone could also be delayed for months.”

As mentioned above, Apple is rumored to introduce four new iPhone models in 2020. The iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max are expected to be successors to the 2019 models. They are tipped to come with a 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch OLED displays. The brand is expected to revamp its iPhone lineup in a big way this year. The 2020 iPhone 12 series is said to feature a design similar to that of iPhone 4 series with rounded corners and 2mm thin bezels. The devices will be powered by a new Apple A14 chipset based on TSMC’s 5nm process.
