It’s the mango season! Apart from having the most versatile flavour, mangoes have a lot of health benefits as well. It's no gamer that this fruit is referred to as the 'King of fruits'. Mangoes have been consumed as a fruit, as cooling drinks, and even used in various delicacies such as chutneys, aam pannas, mango pickles, mango karela, meat tenderisers and salads. India boasts of amazing varieties of mangoes that dominate the markets from mid-April to August. In India, there are 1500 varieties of Mangoes. Each variety has a distinct taste, shape and colour. From Totapuri, Malda, Sindhura to Ratnagiri, Chausa, Raspuri, himsagar, you can never get enough mango varieties in India.

We are on the cusp of Mango season– plump, juicy, sweet and yellow in colour. Mangoes are the undisputed ‘king of fruits.’


This variety is mild in taste and comes in green colour. This variety looks like a parrot beak. This mango is grown in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. This variety is great for salads and pickles.


This variety is found in Maharashtra region of Ratnagiri, Devgarh, Raigad and Konkan. According to a report in Times of India, each mango weighs between 150 to 300 grams. Find a tinge of red on the top of the fruit to identify this variety.


This mango is a mix of sweet and tangy, it has a strong aroma that will stay in your mouth for long. You can identify this mango by its red skin and yellow sweet flesh.


You can easily spot a Pairi- the reddish tinge skin is an easy guess. It has a sour taste, high on fibre and is juicy.


It is originated in Maharashtra and is now also grown in Gujarat and some parts of Karnataka. Also known as Alphonso, this fruit is small egg-shaped, and sharply sweet with mellow tropical flavours and intense aroma. This fruit was named after a Portuguese general and military expert “ Afonso de Albuquerque”, that helped establish a Portuguese colony in India. It is the most expensive variety of Mango that is cultivated in India. Alphonso has a sweet creamy taste and a smooth texture and juicy pulp. It has a unique scent that lets you differentiate it from the others.


This variety of mango is produced in Banaganapalle of Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh. Banginapalli is significantly larger than their Alphonso counterparts, this variety is oval in shape and has a smooth skin with 14cm in length. You can identify this mango by spotting a few spots on it and because of its oval shape and light yellowish colour.


This variety is usually found in Bihar and North India. Did you know, this variety was introduced by Sher Shah Suri during his reign in 16th century? Chausa is named after a town in Bihar and it has sweet pulp and bright yellow skin. You can identify it by its yellow-golden colour.
