Karthigai Deepam, the festival of Lights is a Hindu festival which is celebrated mainly by Tamil Hindus. It is celebrated in the Tamil month of Karthikai when Karthigai Nakshatra coincides with Pournami.
In 2012, Karthigai Deepam will be celebrated on 27th November 2012.
Karthigai Deepam is the most significant festival that is celebrated with pomp and gaiety at Arunachaleswarar temple Tiruvannamalai. On the occasion of Karthigai Deepam, a Maha Deepam known as Thiruvannamalai Maha Deepam will be lit at the top of 2668 ft holy mountain.
This Thiruvannamalai Maha Deepam will be lit at around 6 pm using nearly 3500 kgs of Ghee. The MahaDeepam will be visible around in a radius of 35 km.
Prior to this early in the morning at around 4 am a Bharani Deepam will be lit in the temple.
Sri Arthanareeshwara will bless devotees on this day. The whole Mountain is Shiva Linga. Lakhs of devotees will perform 16 km Girivalam (circumambulation of the holy mountain).
Schedule of Thiruvannamalai Maha Deepam 27 November 2012 :
- Morning 4 am Bharani Deepam
- Afternoon Theerthavari in Brahma Theertham
- Evening 6 pm Maha Deepam; Panchamurthigal in Golden Vimanam
Apart from this, special Abhishekam, Alankaram, Deeparadhanai will be done to Lord Muruga in all temples in the state. Also people in all parts of Tamil Nadu decorate thier Houses, shops, ponds, mountains with traditional lamps.

Festivities of Karthigai Deepam at the Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleshwara Swamy temple are popularly known as Karthikai Brahmotsavam and they last for 10 days. The celebration begins with Dwajarohanam, normally ten days prior to the Karthigai Deepam.
