Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's wife, Dimple Yadav, on Saturday became the first woman elected unopposed in a Lok Sabha by-election from Uttar Pradesh and second candidate in the entire State after Purshottam Das Tandon's election from Allahabad West in 1952.Ms. Yadav's election from Kannauj was announced by Returning Officer Selva Kumari J., after the ****line for withdrawal of nominations expired at 3 p.m.

The announcement was mere formality after two candidates, Dashrath Shankwar and Sanju Katiyar, withdrew from the contest on Friday. The mainstream Congress, Bahujan Samaj Party and Bharatiya Janata Party already decided to give the daughter-in-law of Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh a smooth passage into the Lok Sabha when they backed out of the by-election, citing different reasons.

Who is Dimple Yadav?

Dimple is the wife of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who assumed office in March. His election as CM left vacant the Kannauj Lok Sabha seat, which he thrice represented. Akhilesh and Dimple belong to the Samajwadi Party and have three kids.Born in 1978, Dimple graduated in Humanities from the Lucknow University. So far she has not played a very active role in politics, apart from contesting the November 2009 Firozabad by-election which she lost to actor-turned-politician Raj Babbar.
Sponsored ads She recently declared assets of around Rs238.38 lakh.

Why is she in the news now?
Dimple has filed her nomination for the upcoming by-polls on June 24 contesting for the Kannauj seat. As CM, Akhilesh will not campaign for Dimple. The Kannauj seat is considered to be a safe bet for Dimple as her husband has already represented it thrice. The bahu card might just help the Samajwadi Party maintain status quo in known territory.
The last date for filing nominations is June 6, while the last date for withdrawal of nominations is June 9. The votes will be counted on June 27.

What is the Congress’ role?
Interestingly, Congress will not field any candidate for the Kannauj seat. Defending its decision, party general secretary Digvijay Singh said, ‘We had not contested the seat in the 2009 Lok Sabha election and we are not contesting it now. Besides Kannauj, the party had not put up candidate then from Mainpuri from where Mulayam Singh had contested.’
However, in 2009, Congress candidate, actor-turned-politician Raj Babbar, defeated Dimple in the Firozabad by-election. Incidentally, Dimple’s defeat in that election is what is said to have spurred Akhilesh to take on the Congress and Rahul Gandhi. It is said that he had vowed to avenge his wife’s defeat in the by-election by wiping out the Congress in UP, which he very nearly achieved in the recent assembly election.
However, the current SP-Congress bonhomie is likely to keep the political atmosphere in India’s largest state charged for the coming days.

Why is it important for Dimple to win from Kannauj?
According to Vishwanath Chaturvedi, petitioner in the disproportionate assets against Mulayam Singh Yadav and three of his family members, Dimple is being fielded as a candidate to safeguard her from possible prosecution in the case. ‘It is very important for Mulayam and Akhilesh that Dimple wins from Kannauj. If she wins then the status of being a MP will give her some protection that her father-in-law enjoys. CBI ke case se ghar ki bahu ko bachhana hai (The daughter-in-law has to be protected against the CBI's case.)”, Chaturvedi said in an interview to Rediff.com.

What are the wider political implications?
In an interview with a news channel, Akhilesh said it was the ‘wish of the people’ that someone from his family contested for the Kannauj seat after he vacated it to take charge as CM. The SP also did well in the UP assembly elections in March. With no Congress candidate (and BJP yet to field its own), Dimple stands a chance to keep the Yadav flag flying high in Kannauj.

It may be recalled that at the UPA-II's third anniversary dinner, Mulayam was seen sharing the stage with UPA chief Sonia Gandhi. The Congress is likely to use Mulayam as a bait to counter ally Trinamool Congress (and Mamata Banerjee’s) constant threats of a pull out. Mulayam is likely to get a berth in government in exchange. Looks like it’s going to be win-win situation.
In 2008, the Samajwadi Party played saviour when the Left withdrew support as Congress went ahead with the Indo-US nuclear deal. With the 2014 Lok Sabha polls coming up, who knows?

Dimple Yadav, wife of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, on Tuesday filed her nomination for the Lok Sabha by-election from Kannauj where the Congress has decided not to put any candidate.

Accompanied by her husband, 35-year-old Dimple, who suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Congress' Raj Babbar in the by-election for the Firozabad parliamentary seat in 2009, filed the papers before the returning officer.

The Congress has decided not to field any candidate against Dimple in Kannauj.Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh said, "We had not contested the seat in the 2009 Lok Sabha election and we are not contesting it now."
The Kannauj by-election, being held on June 24, has been necessitated following the resignation of Akhilesh Yadav after his election to the Legislative Council.
Dimple, who was in Kannauj to file her nomination, promised to work honestly for development of the constituency.

Attacking the Bahujan Samaj Party government, Dimple said due to its "corrupt" practices the previous government had put the state on backward track and made the people of the country "ashamed".

"I want to seek blessing of the people who have earlier trusted netaji (Mulayam Singh Yadav) and Akhilesh. I am your beti (daughter), sister and bhabhi (sister-in-law), you should take election campaign in your hand and make me victorious," she said.

"Our party has no difference in its words and actions. We do what we say and development will remain our agenda," she said.

Earlier addressing a rally along with his wife, the chief minister said he would try to change the face of the state in the next five years.

"You all have seen the state budget. We have fulfilled promises made in the party manifesto in about three months time. We have a lot of time left and our government will change the face of the state in the remaining time. I am confident that people will give us another chance after five years," he said.

Terming Dimple's loss in the Firozabad by-poll as a "bad experience", Yadav said though all wanted her to win the elections, her first experience was not good.
"People of Kannauj used to tell me that had you fielded Dimple from here, she would have entered Parliament. I want you to make history this time by ensuring her victory with a huge margin as the country was keenly observing the by-elections," Yadav said.
The CM said his government would ensure all-round development of the constituency, which had always supported Samajwadi ideology.
Striking an emotional chord with locals, the chief minister said that people of Kannauj made history by making him the youngest MP, then youngest party president and now youngest chief minister. "I will not be able to come here as a model code of conduct is in force. If I come media will raise the matter. I urge all the people to support Dimple," he said.
Noting that the Lok Sabha polls were not far, Akhilesh said, "These by-elections are for a few months only. If the 2014 polls are held six months earlier, we don't have much time."
Alleging that the previous government did nothing on the power generation front, Yadav said that not a single plant was started in the previous regime. "We are working hard in this direction and trying to ensure better power scenario in the state. You people might be witnessing a change as you are getting more electricity. The medical college in your area will also be started soon," he said.
Alleging that some officers of previous regime were not serving the people, Yadav said that a lot of changes have to be made so that the common man gets relief from day-to-day problems.

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's wife Dimple Yadav is all set to make her political comeback. Today she will file her nomination for the Kannauj Lok Sabha by-polls.

The parliamentary constituency fell vacant after Mr Yadav resigned from the Lok Sabha after he was sworn in as a member of the UP Legislative Council after becoming the Chief Minister.

Dimple was the unanimous choice of the Samajwadi Party's Parliamentary Board that had announced her name after an overwhelming number of party workers demanded that the she be chosen to contest from Kannauj.

Mr Yadav has represented Kannauj for three successive times in the Lok Sabha. In 2009, Akhilesh had contested from two parliamentary constituencies - Kannauj and Firozabad. He won both seats, but relinquished the Firozabad seat. His wife then contested the by-election from there. She lost to the Congress's Raj Babbar.

Interestingly, the Congress has decided not to field any candidate against Dimple. Even the BSP has so far not put out their party candidate's name. The BJP has however fielded a candidate from Kannauj.

Kannauj goes to the polls on June 24. There is just one day left for the nominations to be filed.
