The biggest epic of all times ‘Mahabharat’ has been recaptured again and again on small screen. This time it is Star Plus which is taking the plunge to reinvent this magnum opus. The story of Pandavas and Kauravas which till now is looked upon as an inspiration for several human facets.

The name itself has a larger than life meaning attached to it and etching it on TV is not a small task. Well, our producers and creative directors are brave enough to touch the topic and let me tell you as much as I can derive from watching the promos, the show looks quiet promising.

Star Plus and producer Siddharth Kumar Tewary’s Swastik Productions are geared up to make this show look highly impactful especially for the young audiences. The visual effects and production quality is very much enhanced.

The promos were out several days before to create a buzz in the nation before its mega launch on 16 September, Monday to Friday at 8.30 PM on Star Plus. The show will be replacing Star’s Ek hazaaron mein meri behna hai. Mahabharat will be a half-hour show consisting of a fixed 128 episodes.

“The story of Mahabharata has been told and retold several times over. But if you see, the current generation of under twenty-fives, that is, those who had not grown up watching Mahabharat on Sunday mornings, would probably not know about the complexity and enormity of the story. By bringing the story into our lives again, we want the younger generation to learn the saga and the history,” said Nikhil Madhok, Senior Vice-President – Marketing at Star India.

It is being promoted with a host of marketing campaigns including extensive use of on-ground and digital while using regular mediums as well.

Combining modern technology with intense story-telling, Mahabharat aims to cultivate young audiences for this legendary saga which is considered the second longest epic of the world. The first of a set of launch innovations is a special piece of programming content – ‘Making of Mahabharat’ which aims to stir up viewer imagination with a glimpse of the ambitious scale of the project.

The Making features interviews with the key crew from the show that includes personalities like Bhanu Athaiya, Rajit Kapur, Omung Kumar, Mihir Bhuta, Thomas Xavier etc, apart from exclusive behind the scenes from the show. This content is airing in prime time on the channel as well as in the digital space.

To bring Mahabharat alive in cities across India, the channel has set up a series of exciting and innovative on-ground activation initiatives. The exquisite Mahabharat Museum will showcase selected weaponry, jewelry and finery worn or used by the characters in the show.

Set up in major malls of these cities, the Museum gives the viewers a fascinating first-hand look & feel of the show and its characters even before its launch on television. The museum will also take the viewers on a 3D virtual tour of Mahabharat’s grand set, an experience which is nothing short of a visual delight. Some of the locations shown in the 3D video include the magnificent Hastinapur palace, Vrindavan and Kunti Bhoj.

To reach out to viewers deep into small town India the same museum has been converted into a ‘Mahabharat Museum on Wheels’ that will have LED installed canter vans traveling throughout the country. With an objective of targeting the youth who are less familiar with the story and characters, the channel has introduced an interactive virtual ******** in colleges using Kinect Mirror technology.

This unique experience allows youngsters a chance to virtually dress up like some of the popular characters from Mahabharat and instantly upload their images on social platforms. Additionally, the channel has deployed promoters at youth hangouts, to give them an opportunity of viewing breathtaking visuals from the show with the help of Glasstrons. These special glasses will give patrons an on-the-go audio-visual experience of the Mahabharat sets, promos and the other visually stunning content.

Taking a leap with digital, the channel will also introduce a high engagement mobile app that will allow users to listen to Mahabharat shlokas, take part in daily contests, pose with different weapons and jewelry from the show and even go through the entire family tree of the Mahabharat characters.

The high impact outdoor campaign for the show will cover a massive 100 cities across the country. It includes innovations like a life size mannequin of Arjun firing an arrow at a fish rotating on a motor above him. Nikhil Madhok, Sr. Vice President, Marketing said, “Disruption was the key thought around our campaign. That’s what you will see in every medium we have used to promote the show. Starting with the set of the differentiated character promos that are getting attention.

For eg. we positioned Shakuni not as a scheming old uncle but as a brother who loved his sister Gandhari so much that he dedicated his life to taking revenge on Hastinapur for the injustice meted out to her. You will find the same thought of disruption in the clutter breaking launch day innovation in print. Wait and watch.”

Adds Madhok, “The campaign is deep and extensive going all the way from Metros to LC 1 towns. While there is a lot of action around launch, we also have some exciting ideas lined up post the launch of the show”

With creative associations ranging from writer Salim Khan, noted author Devdutt Pattanaik, Oscar winning designer Bhanu Athaiya, music directors Ajay-Atul, action director Ram Shetty and Oumang Kumar as set designer on board, Mahabharat has already raised the bar. Strengthened with innovative and disruptive marketing activities, it is has clearly become the most awaited show on television this year. Here is the glittering star cast of Mahabharat-

Star Plus show Mahabharat delays its launch...

It is said that the much awaited epic series will now air from 29th of July and replace Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hai!

Produced by Siddharth Kumar Tewary of Swastik Productions, the epic series Mahabharat which will be aired on Star Plus is creating a buzz for quite a long time. The brand new Mahabharat which was supposed to commence from June 10th, has now been postponed. It is being said that it was the channel's decision to delay the launch of 'Mahabharat'. Consequently, the promos of the show have also been kept on hold for a month. Therefore, there will be no promotion in the month of June, 2013.
We tried to talk to some of the actors who have already started shooting for the epic and even as most of them admitted to being part of the show none of them knew the reason for the delay in launch.
Sameer Dharmadhikari who was last seen in Zee TV's popular shows Yahan Main Ghar Ghar Kheli and Jhansi Ki Rani will be seen in Mahabharat, playing the character of Shantanu, King of Hastinapur. Says Sameer, "I've finished shooting long back and I don't think I will be shooting with them again as mine is a very short yet very important cameo. I shot for Mahabharat for only 15 days in outdoor locations like Kashmir and Gujarat. My character Shantanu basically introduces the show and makes an exit as soon as the show builds up its drama."
Sayantani Ghosh who was recently seen in shows like Welcome: Baazi Mehmaan Nawaazi ki on Life OK and Bigg Boss Season 6 on Colors, is also a part of Mahabharat but she too declined to comment on the delay, "Yes, you've heard right. I'm playing the character of 'Satyawati' in this show. It's a cameo role and the show opens with me. Apart from that I cannot reveal much, about the show or the delay. 'Mahabharat' is planned to run for six months, so every character will be seen for a very short period of time. "
Puneet Issar, a veteran actor, who is remembered as Duryodhan of B.R. Chopra's Mahabharat will now be playing the role of Parshuram in the new edition of Mahabharat. Puneet says, "My character of Parshuram is very interesting. My avatar in this show is absolutely magnificent. The production people are working with great passion and hard work. Indeed, they are also investing a lot of money, time and energy to produce a good show. It's on a grand scale this time and every minute thing has been executed in detail."
Confirming the delay for the launch of the show, Puneet says, "Yes, there is a delay in the show going on air. The reason behind it is very simple and logical. Mahabharat is going to be a daily show. And for a daily historic show to succeed, the output too should be of high quality. The post production which involves fine graphical work, video effects and other technical patch work takes a lot of time. So basically, we are creating a bank, so that the show can run smoothly once launched."
Our source says, "Mahabharat has plans of having a grand opening on July 29th, 2013 at the 8:30pm slot which will replace the ongoing show Ek Hazaaron Mein Meri Behna Hain produced by Cinevistaa which has well known faces like Nia Sharma, Krystle Dsouza, Karan Tacker and Kushal Tandon. The show which is not showing good numbers on the TRP charts will now make a grand exit with an one hour Maha Episode to be telecast on July 27th, 2013 from 7.00 to 8:00pm."
We tried to contact producer Siddharth Kumar Tewary about the delay in the show but he did not pick up our calls and did not revert to our text message.
So, the countdown has begun. 67 days remaining for Mahabharat to hit the floors!

I just wanted to be stronger warrior for Mahabharat, says Shaheer Sheikh!

Journey from daily soap Navya to upcoming mythological series Mahabharat is something outstanding and life-changing experience for TV actor Shaheer Sheikh, who is ready to play new-age Arjun in Star Plus’ highly anticipated epic Mahabharat that is slated for September month release.

The actor prepared a lot for his role of Arjun, a character who requires a warrior’s look, something Shaheer had to build from his model looking face and persona. He said, earlier rising early or hitting the gym for more than two days was almost unthinkable for him, but to justify the iconic character of Arjun, he undergone through every hurdle with will.

“Now, I am more disciplined. Past six months, I have become an early riser. I go for a run, work out and take care of my diet for this character,” shares Shaheer.

But it's not about getting six-pack abs, he clarifies, “I just wanted to be stronger. My dhanush is seven-feet tall and I wanted to lift it with ease and have the right body posture. I was always told that I didn't have to look like a model, but a warrior.”

The actor did a lot of research to get his character of Arjun right. “I did a lot of reading. Arjun is known for his focus and determination and athletes and sportspersons in India are inspired by him. Preparing for this role over this last year has had a very positive effect on me,” said Shaheer.

We wish you luck Shaheer!

Yuvika Choudhary to play Draupadi in Star Plus’ Mahabharat?

Looks like the search for the face to play the role of Draupadi in Star Plus’ upcoming show Mahabharat (Swastik Productions) is in full swing. The names that were tossed in the air were Bollywood actresses Ria Sen, Sayali Bhagat, amongst others. However, it seems that they all have missed the train and the lady who has bagged the meaty role is ***y and curvaceous Yuvika Choudhary.

Yuvika, who was seen playing a cameo in the movie Om Shanti Om, is likely to play the desirable role of Draupadi in Mahabharat.

Well, the character of Draupadi is definitely going to bring a lot of prominence for any actor who bags the role. It’s a wait and watch situation before we come to know who will become Draupadi, the woman who is at the centre of the epic, Mahabharat.Right now… the buzz is on Yuvika being signed on for the role!!!

Swastik Pictures’ ambitious mythological saga Mahabharat for Star Plus is finally ready with their first pilot for the show with fresh faces and planning to present it to the channel next week. The show is expected to go on floors in September.

A source from the show says, “We shot our pilot out of Mumbai and when we had a screening of it, everyone liked it. By this month-end we will be showing it to the channel, and then they will review it and give us their feedback by mid-June. If they give us a go-ahead we will start hunting for an appropriate location. Most of the actors will be fresh faces in the actual show as well. Technically too it has come out really well and we are sure it is way better than any other mythological shows which have aired on Indian television. However even though our project will get a nod from the channel, it will take off only in September, as we won’t be shooting in the rains and construction of the sets too will take that much time.”

Initially Mahabharat was supposed to be made by Bobby Bedi and Chandraprakash Dwiwedi’s Kaleidoscope. They had shot a few episodes but then they were s****ped by the channel. Finally it reached the hands of Swastik a few months back. Actors like Kunal Verma and Harshad Chopra, Adita Wahi were approached to play pivotal characters in this mytho but they refused to do it.

Siddharth Tewary of Swastik Pictures remained unavailable for comment.
