Emmys 2021: The Crown wins big; a look at complete winners’ list




The 73rd took place on September 20 at the Event Deck at LA Live, an indoor-outdoor venue. Following all protocols, attendees had to show vaccination proof. After last year’s virtual ceremony, it returned to the red-carpet event.
Here are the list of all the winners.

The series about the British royal family won the Emmy Award for best drama series Sunday, giving the streaming platfomr its first win in the most elite of Emmy categories.
The show was also the night's biggest winner, with seven awards including a sweep of the dramatic acting categories.

It beat out its fellow nominees "Bridgerton," "The Boys," "The Handmaid's Tale," "Lovecraft Country," "The Mandalorian," "Pose" and "This Is Us."

"Ted Lasso” has won the Emmy Award for best comedy series, giving the streaming service its first win in the major category. It stars Jason Sudeikis in the title role as an endlessly positive American football coach brought to Britain to manage a major soccer team and set up to fail. The show won four Emmys at Sunday night's ceremony, including best actor in a comedy for Sudeikis.

Jason Sudeikis, who plays the title character ‘Ted Lasso’ won the Emmy Award for best actor in a comedy series on Sunday night.

It's the first career acting Emmy for Sudeikis, and the third Emmy of the night for "Ted Lasso."

Josh O'Connor won the Emmy Award for best actor in a drama series for playing Prince Charles on "The Crown."

Olivia Colman won the Emmy for best actress in a drama series Sunday for playing Queen Elizabeth II in the fourth season "The Crown."

McGregor won best actor in a limited series or TV movie for "Halston."

Kate Winslet won best actress in a limited series or TV movie for "Mare of Easttown" on Sunday night.

"RuPaul's Drag Race" is making it a marathon. The show won the Emmy for top reality-competition show for the fourth straight year on Sunday night.

Jean Smart has an Emmy to mark a remarkable career renaissance. Smart won best actress in a comedy series Sunday night for her role in "Hacks."

"Last Week Tonight With John Oliver" won the Emmy Award for best variety talk series for the sixth straight year on Sunday night.

The Emmy for best supporting actor in a drama series goes to Tobias Menzies for "The Crown."

Gillian Anderson has turned the Iron Lady into Emmy gold. Anderson won best supporting actress in a drama series on Sunday night for playing British prime minister Margaret Thatcher in the fourth season of "The Crown."

Evan Peters won best supporting actor in a limited series or TV movie for "Mare of Easttown" on Sunday night, and Julianne Nicholson won best supporting actress for the show.

Brett Goldstein won best supporting actor in a comedy series for his role in "Ted Lasso," which had four nominees in the category.

Ted Lasso’s Hannah Waddingham won best supporting actress in a comedy series Sunday, which could be in for a big night.

"The Queen's Gambit" was named best limited series.

Emmys 2021: 'Schitt's Creek' cast reunites



Last year, the quirky Canadian show 'Schitt's Creek' made Emmy history by sweeping every single major comedy award. However, the cast didn't get a chance to celebrate the win in a grand way as the ceremony had taken place virtually due to the rising Covid cases last year.
Thankfully, the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards has now marked the reunion of the 'Schitt's Creek' family.

Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, Catherine O'Hara and Annie Murphy were present at the award ceremony. They played David, Johnny, Moira and Alexis Rose, respectively on the hit show.
They even posed for shutterbugs on the red carpet of Emmys 2021.

Dan, who recently signed a creative deal with an OTT platform, wore a blue outfit with a wrap blazer. His on-screen sister Murphy, was spotted wearing a deep green Valentino Couture dress.

O'Hara caught the attention with a red Cong Tri outfit that included matching trousers and a d****d top that included a train. Eugene sported a black suit.

Before making an appearance at the gala, Dan took to his Instagram account and send best wishes to all the nominees.

"Can't believe this was only last year. Good luck to everyone tonight," he posted.

The four actors even walked on stage to an uproarious standing ovation at the Emmys 2021.

Emmys 2021: 'The Handmaid's Tale' makes record for most losses




Actress Elizabeth Moss starrer 'The Handmaid's Tale' set a record with most losses at the 73rd Emmy Awards, which was held at the L.A. Live's Event Deck at Los Angeles' Microsoft Theater.
The series had a nomination tally of 21 nods, it was expected to pick up a couple of honours between the Creative Arts and Primetime Emmys ceremonies.

Instead, the dystopian drama lost all of its awards, setting the record for the most losing series in a single year, topping AMC's 'Mad Men' zero for 17 that occurred in 2012, reports the source.
Only three shows earned more nominations than Hulu's flagship series, with 'The Crown' and 'The Mandalorian' receiving 24 noms each and 'WandaVision' picking up 23.

Also, like 'The Handmaid's Tale', NBC's 'Saturday Night Live' landed 21 noms, but managed to pick up a handful of awards between the ceremonies.

Other shows, which were left empty handed in Emmy history include 'Northern Exposure' and 'The Larry Sanders Show'. which went zero for 16 in their respective years.

In 2017, 'The Handmaid's Tale' won the Emmy Award for drama series, making it the first streamer to win the big award.

Since then, the series has been nominated for the award in 2018 and 2020.

Emmys 2021: Awards remain lily-white despite diversity of nominees




No actor of colour won an award at the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards despite a diverse nomination field.
Black performers had a strong showing at the Creative Arts ceremony. But on Sunday night nominees of colour failed to win most categories, including all six acting fields.

During the three-hour ceremony, led by a black host in Cedric the Entertainer, it took two hours for a person of colour to be recognised: 'RuPaul's Drag Race' for Outstanding Reality Competition.
RuPaul broke the record for the most Emmy wins by a person of colour.

Michaela Coel, who was nominated for four awards, was honored soon after for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series for HBO Max's 'I May Destroy You'.

Coel became the first black woman to win for writing for a limited series, reports deadline.com.

Hamilton won for pre-recorded special, while Debbie Allen was the recipient of the 2021 Governors Award.

During her acceptance speech, she highlighted racism and ***ism she faced in the industry while on her journey to becoming a celebrated producer, director, actor, dancer, and choreographer who helps lift up others from her community.

Without discounting the success of shows like Netflix's 'The Crown', HBO Max's 'Hacks', and Apple TV+'s 'Ted Lasso', the wins raise the question, were other nominees not equally worthy of celebration?

After three seasons, groundbreaking series 'Pose' has concluded and earned multiple nominations for executive producer and director Steven Canals, the first leading actress nod for a trans woman for Mj Rodriguez, and Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series for Billy Porter.

None were honoured for their contributions.

Michael K. Williams, who died earlier this month, was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work in HBO's Lovecraft Country. After five nominations across his lengthy career, he was not posthumously celebrated for his standout performance.

After that diversity showed up strong at the nomination stage with a record 49 non-Anglo nominees recognised in the acting and hosting categories.

At the Creative Emmys, Maya Rudolph became the first same category consecutive double-Emmy winner in 20 years and the third Black woman ever to win back-to-back awards with her repeat trophies for 'Saturday Night Live' and 'Big Mouth'.

"I feel really honoured that I'm part of a legacy as the third woman of colour to achieve that," Rudolph said.

Emmys 2021: Kerry Washington pays tribute to late Michael K. Williams




Kerry Washington paid tribute to 'The Wire' actor and 'Lovecraft Country' star Michael K. Williams while presenting the supporting actor in a drama series category during the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday night reports The Hollywood Reporter.
During her brief tribute, Washington called Williams a "brilliantly talented actor and a generous human being who has left us far too soon."

"I know you're here because you wouldn't miss this. Your excellence, your artistry will endure. We love you," she added.
Nominated in the supporting actor in a drama category for his role as Montrose Freeman in HBO's 'Lovecraft Country', the actor was considered the frontrunner before his death earlier this month at age 54. The win went to 'The Crown's' Tobias Menzies.

Ahead of the event, Williams' 'The Wire' co-star Wendell Pierce took to Twitter, writing, "Tonight at the Emmys, I hope they honor my friend. God Bless Michael K. Williams."

During the show's In-Memorium segment, a clip of Williams was also featured of the late actor sharing his stance on paying it forward to the actors who follow him. "The only way for me to say thank you is by making sure that the foundation that I am standing on is strong enough to support the next person that will stand on these two shoulders," he said in the recorded clip.

Williams, who was found dead on September 6 in his Brooklyn, NY, residence, was best known for his beloved and iconic roles as Omar Little on HBO's 'The Wire' and Albert "Chalky" White on the HBO series 'Boardwalk Empire'.

The posthumous Emmy honour would have marked his first career and individual win, and his fifth overall nomination. He was previously nominated for roles in Netflix's 'When They See Us' and HBO's 'Bessie and The Night Of'. The 2021 win would have made Williams only the seventh posthumous performance winner in the history of the Emmys.

The 'Lovecraft Country' star's nephew Dominic Dupont - the subject of a Vice documentary that garnered Williams one of his four prior Emmy nominations - had planned to accept the award on his uncle's behalf.

Prior to Sunday's ceremony, an outpouring of social media tributes followed the news of Williams' death by members of the entertainment industry.

Williams' 'Lovecraft Country' co-star Jurnee Smollett also shared an emotional message on her Instagram, reflecting on her time working with her co-star and his upcoming absence from Sunday's ceremony.

"He was supposed to be here with us this week in LA for the Emmys," she wrote. "He was supposed to see how big Hunter is, we were gonna dance, celebrate, cry. Instead our brother was laid to rest today. I still can't make sense of it. Perhaps it's selfish of me to want to hold onto this beautiful man that came into my life & forever changed it."
