Default TOP 10 Directors of Bollywood

A movie to remember
It is not easy in B-town to make a film that will transcend time and genre and live on even after the lights come on. The world's busiest movie industry has so far never failed to entertain a billion people that live, breathe and think cinema.

Does society influence cinema or has cinema gradually woven itself into the Indian social matrix? As the lines between reel and real blur, new directors face the increasingly tough challenge of carving a notch in Indian cinematic history. We take a look at some of Bollywood's finest directors who changed the course of Indian cinema with their first films.

Kiran Rao: Dhobi Ghaat
Internationally known as the 'Mumbai Diaries', 'Dhobi Ghaat' is produced and directed by actor Aamir Khan's wife Kiran Rao. In her directorial debut, Rao explores the lives of four protagonists and that of a fifth – the city Mumbai. The film stars Aamir Khan and Prateik Babbar and is produced under the banner of Aamir Khan Productions. Will Rao be able to live up to the reputation of her predecessors? Dadasaheb Phalke: Raja Harishchandra
Little did Dadasaheb Phalke know that with his directorial debut 'Raja Harishchandra' he will set free the genie that will one day build a cinematic empire that would provide the livelihoods of thousands and entertainment for millions.

India's first full-length feature film, based on the legend of King Harishchandra, had an all-male cast, as no woman was available for the female leads. The reel was 3700 feet long running roughly for 40 minutes. The fascinating story behind the film is that when it was made, working in cinema carried a social taboo.

So Dada Saheb advised his artists to tell others that they were working in the factory of one 'Harishchandra'.

The film was first shown in public on May 3, 1913 at Mumbai's Coronation Cinema. The film was so successful that Dada Saheb had to make more prints to show the film in rural areas as well.

Shyam Benegal: Ankur
Ankur will always be close to the hearts of many for being both director Shyam Benegal's and actress Shabana Azmi's debut feature film. As parallel cinema, it typically set the pace for many firsts. One of which is unusually strong dialogue peppered with profanity. The plot is based on a true story that occurred in Hyderabad, apparently in the 1950s. Ankur won three National Film Awards and 43 other prizes, both in India and abroad. It was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 24th Berlin International Film Festival. The brilliant film that takes a good hard look at village feudalism immediately catapulted Benegal to fame.

Shekhar Kapoor: Masoom
'Masoom' or 'The Innocent' is Shekhar Kapur's directorial debut that stirred up society with several introspective questions on love, fidelity and acceptance. Broadly based on 'Man, Woman and Child' written by Erich Segal, Kapoor creates ripples in the lives of a normal family faced with thorny issues they have no experience of. Brilliant performances by actors Naseeruddin Shah and Shabana Azmi as a married couple struggling to come to terms with an act of infidelity, makes the movie what it is. If it is human to err, why is forgiving difficult? The junior actors will always be memorable for bringing out the tension that children imbibe from their limited understanding of feuding grownups and their issues.
